Dutch Oven Chocolate Chip Cookies
Next time you go camping don’t forget the hot and fresh chocolate chip cookies! Yes, that’s right! With dutch oven baking you can make homemade cookies right in your camp spot! This is really quite easy to do by making the dough ahead of time and keeping it cold in the cooler until you are ready to make it. Or, if you are in a pinch for time, grab ready made dough at the store. You can use the dutch oven with any of your favorite cookie recipe. For this particular recipe I used my hubby’s favorite cookie recipe from Betty Crocker.
The trick to making the cookies in the dutch oven is keeping the temperature up, but the coals on the bottom down so the cookies do not scorch. I used a 4:1 of coals on the top of the dutch oven to coals on the bottom of the dutch oven. To reach 375 degrees in my 12 inch oven I need approximately 27 coals, which means I would put 7 coals on the bottom and 20 on the top. This is a lot coals on the top so make sure you have a good handle to use…it can be tricky to take the lid on and off without spilling coals into the oven.
Another fun addition to the warm cookies at the campsite is homemade ice cream. If you are able to keep ice frozen (I have taken a block of ice in a drink cooler and then chipped away at it as needed), an ice cream maker is a great way to add in another treat to the warm cookies and also a lot of fun for the kids to do. We purchased one just like this for my Dad for Father’s Day a few years back and it’s the hit of the evening when we make it.
Below is the dutch oven guide and the recipe that I used for this batch! Have fun experimenting with your own favorite cookie recipe too!
Mix together granulated and brown sugar, and butter. Beat until well mixed. Add in vanilla and egg and continue mixing until fluffed.
Stir in flour, baking soda and sea salt . Fold in chocolate chips. Roll dough into balls and place on parchment paper lining the dutch oven. Place the lid on the dutch oven, then move the dutch oven to the coals.
Refer to the Dutch Oven Cooking Guide for the appropriate amount of coals for your size of dutch oven.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light brown. Make sure to WATCH CAREFULLY after the first 8 minutes as they will burn quickly if left unattended.

Lodge Camp Dutch Oven, 6 Qt – $55.52
- I love the Lifetime Warranty that Lodge offers on it’s bakeware! And it’s also made in the USA.
- This 6-Quart Dutch Oven is ideal for using while camping in the campfire or on a bed of charcoal.
- One of the things that I like the most is that this one is already seasoned cast iron and ready to use.
- The cast iron lid inverts for use as griddle which is great for making breakfast over the campfire.
- This particular one measures 12-inch diameter by 3.75-inch deep.
Thanks BettyCrocker!
