52 Weeks of Pinterest: Week 3 – Pudding Poke Cake!

This year I wanted to go with a resolution I would have no problem sticking to! Then as I was pinning an item on Pinterest, a light bulb flashed on above my head. Ok, maybe not literally, but this great idea popped into my head. Those of us who are Pinterest users know that we pin hundreds of things a week, but do we ever do them? So I decided this year I would do one of my pins every week. At the moment, 52 weeks of Pinterest was born. Each week I will do something I found on Pinterest rather it be a craft, new recipe, organizing technique, or whatever!

This week, I went with a pin from our Desserts Board: Pudding Poke Cake!

Two things most couponers have in their stockpile? Cake and Pudding! I had to try this pin.

Before we get started I have to say this cake was fun, yummy, easy, and perfect if you want cake and don’t have frosting!





Things You Will Need:

Cake Mix (Whatever ingredients your cake mix calls for)
Box of Instant Pudding
1 Cup Powdered Sugar (Optional)

First you need to mix the cake according to the directions on the box and bake. I choose chocolate because I am a choco-holic, 🙂

While your cake is baking go ahead and make your pudding mix as directed on the box. Add in your powdered sugar now. This is optional, I think it gives the pudding a frosting taste so I used it in my recipe.

If you are using a full size cake mix like Duncan Hines, you ware going to want to use the large box of Jell-O Pudding. This will make a 13×9 cake. If you are using a smaller cake mix or recipe like the Jiffy Mix Cake Mix, you will use the smaller box of pudding. Also note that if you use the smaller box of pudding, you should decrease your powdered sugar to about a 1/2 cup.

Once the cake is done baking, take whatever you have nearby and start poking wholes in that baby. Seems odd right, to “destroy” that beauty of chocolate! I used the end of a wooden spoon, but you can use a straw, end of a pen, whatever you want.


Once you have holes poked all over the place, go ahead and pour your pudding mixture over the top of it. The original pin did state to pour only half, put in the refrigerator to cool for an hour or so and then spread the remaining pudding over the top after. I like to find shortcuts so I poured it all at once and it was fine.

Once you have your pudding mixture poured over that hot and yummy cake, put the cake in the refrigerator to cool. You will want to serve this yummy goodness cold.

I tried to show in my image above the sweet pockets of pudding in this cake but I am not a photographer and sometimes I just can’t get a picture to do what I want it to. However, I promise they are there and you won’t be sorry trying this cake!




This stuff was soooo yummy! Quick cake, would make an easy dessert item for potlucks. My husband is not a chocolate fan, I know, I think something is wrong with him too. Anyhow, even though he is not a fan of chocolate cakes, he had no problem gobbling this up. Plus, my little bakers in training had fun helping poke holes in the cake!

My FAVORITE thing about this cake aside from the fact it’s so moist and yummy? The possibilities are endless!  Mix and match all sorts of flavors as far as cake and pudding go. I am thinking for Valentine’s Day doing a Red Velvet Cake with Cheesecake pudding! YUM!
