Create a Book Advent Calendar!
Make your own Christmas advent calendar with books!
As soon as the tree goes up, my kids are already begging almost nightly to open a gift! That is why I love advent calendars so much! It lets the kids both “open” something every night plus countdown to Christmas morning! I was buying a new advent calendar every year for the kids. All they got out of were some pieces of candy and then come Christmas, it would make it’s way to trash. I hate wasting money and then I realized that is exactly what I was doing.
I saw on Facebook that one of my friends had made her own advent calendar. Such a neat idea. Not only do your children get to open up something every night, it is something they can continue to use over and over again! Plus, it’s something we could share together as a family.
This is my third year now doing a book advent calendar with my kids. I’ll share with you a few tips and tricks I have found along the way!
Things you will need:
I like to pick up books pretty cheap throughout the year for this advent calendar. A few of our favorites for the advent calendar include Pete the Cat, Golden Books, Scholastic books, and Christmas books. The idea of the book advent calendar is that one book is unwrapped each night and read as a bedtime story. This means you want to keep the books shorter and not big novels or chapter books.
I will also pick up any decent priced and in good shape books I see at yard sales or thrift stores too. This is a great way to find some really expensive books for only a few dollars.
Wrap each book individually. You don’t have to number them if you do not want to, I think it’s fun for the younger kids to see the number to know how many days are left until Christmas. My kids like to dig through the pile to find the right number for that night!
If you shop at a store that does paper bags, save a few! You can use these to make your own wrapping paper! I love doing this because it can be decorated whichever way you would like if you choose to do so! Plus you are a re-purposing something that probably would have went straight to garbage anyways! When I have enough bags, I like to do all of my presents this way! This kids also get a kick out of decorating them.
If you have little ones who love counting down to Christmas, you should try the book advent calendar! It is the Christmas tradition that keeps on giving!
