DIY Hanging BOO Decor
Halloween Decorations that are Family Friendly!

I’m not a big decorator for Halloween but I did want something really cute to put on my front door. Inspired by Pinterest, I decided to make this hanging BOO. It was super easy to collect the supplies, put it together and hang it up! Because I had most of the supplies on hand already, I really only paid about $12 for the wooden craft letters at Michaels Craft store. They often have 40%-50% off coupons in the newspaper as well as one online to cut down on the cost a little bit. Here’s how to get started…
You will need:
- BOO wood craft letters (purchased at Michaels Craft Store for about $4 each)
- Glitter
- Ribbon
- Acrylic craft paints
- Spray adhesive
- Clear finish spray (optional)
- Paint brush
- Sandpaper (fine grit)
- Scissors
- Newspaper or other work surface
Start out by gently sanding down any rough edges on your wooden letters with fine grit sandpaper. Make sure to wipe off any dust afterwards so it doesn’t get mixed up in your paint.
Pick your paint colors and paint each letter whatever color you like! Let dry. This doesn’t take long, I think I folded a load of laundry or two and came back to it.
Make sure you have a good protected work surface like newspaper under your letters and evenly apply your spray adhesive according to spray can instructions.
Right after applying the spray adhesive, evenly shake or sprinkle your glitter over then entire letter. Let dry. Once it’s dry you can tilt your letter to one side and gently tap off any excess glitter.
If you’d like, you can then apply a light coat of clear finish spray. Follow the instructions on your spray can and let dry completely. This step is not necessary but I like to do it to help keep the glitter in place so it doesn’t come off while hanging or storing it.
Once your letters are completely dry, you can arrange them how you like and tie them together with ribbon. String or burlap would be cute too!
After your letters are tied together, add some Ribbon to the top letter and tie together in a bow for hanging. I used a door wreath hanger like this one to hang mine. Sadly it was raining outside when I finished it, but I’ve since moved it to my front door and love it! Here is the finished project…

Don’t have any glitter? Use some spooky scrapbook paper and Mod Podge it on! You can change up whatever color paints or ribbon you use too. You could even do an entirely different word! There are tons of different options! Get creative and have fun!
