First manufactured in Cincinnati, Ohio as a wallpaper cleaner in the 1930s, it eventually debuted nationally at an education convention in 1955 as a fun putty for play. Word quickly spread to Macy's and Marshall Field's about a new type of modeling clay for kids. By 1956, the wallpaper cleaner had officially become Play-Doh and a star was born.
