DIY Peanut Butter Pumpkin Dog Treats

My dogs are my children and I just don’t feel right about having any sort of holiday festivities that they can’t enjoy too. Unfortunately, Halloween isn’t a holiday they can have fun with. I mean, they really don’t enjoy the absolutely ridiculous costumes I put on them quite as much as I do and they can’t enjoy any of the sugar overload that the rest of us revel in. So, I decided to find something they could enjoy; Peanut Butter Pumpkin dog treats! While this recipe isn’t my own (I found it online), I wanted to share it with you so your four legged friends could join in the Halloween fun too!

IMG_9475Here’s what you’re going to need:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup of PLAIN pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • cookie cutter (I used a bat shape)
  • rolling pin
  • baking sheets
  • stand mixer or mixing bowl
  • Optional: parchment paper (don’t use wax paper; it’s NOT the same thing)

Preheat your oven to 350*.

Next, combine the wheat flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon. I added all the ingredients to my stand mixer and used the dough attachment. If you don’t have a stand mixer just add all your ingredients to a mixing bowl and use a spoon to combine the ingredients. Then use your hands to work the ingredients into a dough.

IMG_9454My ingredients were a little drier than I wanted to work with so I added a tablespoon more pumpkin.

Work your ingredients into a soft dough.

IMG_9456Now, place a piece of parchment paper onto your work surface and place the dough on top. If you don’t have parchment paper, just cover your work surface in a handful of wheat flour.

Use a rolling pin to flatten and stretch the dough out until it is about 1/2 inch thick.

IMG_9458Once your dough is rolled out, take your favorite Halloween themed cookie cutter and press it into your dough.

IMG_9459Place your “cookies” onto a parchment covered baking sheet. Again, you can skip the parchment paper. Just place the treat right onto the baking sheet.

Bake at 350* for 40 minutes.

Once the 40 minutes are up, place the treats out to cool. When they’re completely cool to the touch, they’re ready to share with your four legged friends.
