DIY THREE Ingredient Orange Julius: The Yummiest Healthy Drink You’ll Ever Make!

My sister-in-law is a GENIUS! I was having a hard time drinking these health shakes that I was pretty sure were going to kill me and just when I was ready to give up, she gives me the most amazingly yummy and easy recipe for a healthy Orange Julius! While this is the perfect drink to add any health shake mix too, it’s also perfect on it’s own (believe me, I’ve tried it). So, if you are looking for an easy way to transition into a healthy lifestyle or, you just flat out like the taste of an Orange Julius, this post is for you!


Here’s all that you’re going to need:

The first thing I did was use my juicer to juice two oranges. If you don’t have a juicer, just use any store bought orange juice you have on hand. Just remember, store bought doesn’t always equal healthy but it works just the same!

Add about 6 ounces to your blender.


Next, add two tablespoons of your low fat vanilla yogurt.


Now, add your ice. I filled a measuring cup with about 6 ounces.

Now, if you want to be bad, you can certainly substitute vanilla ice cream or orange sherbert to make an even sweeter drink! Just make sure you don’t add too much! You just want enough to turn your drink into a shake.


Finally, give your blender a good spin!

  • This looks delicious! I’m curious whether or not it would be possible to use frozen oranges in lieu of ice and orange juice. I have no idea how well frozen oranges would blend.

    • Hi, Beth! I don’t think it would be a problem to do that. It might turn out quite nicely! I’ve used frozen bananas to make ice cream and it comes out with a great texture! It can’t hurt to try it! Let us know if it works for you! Inquiring minds want to know! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Last night, I tried frozen oranges with frozen milk and a bit of vanilla. It didn’t work. The inside skin stuff (sorry, can’t think of what it’s called… the stuff around each segment) didn’t blend, so every bite had unpleasantly large + sour bits of it. I barely noticed the orange flavour. Perhaps I used too much milk. And too much vanilla… It was overwhelming. I’m determined to get my Orange Julius at home, though (not that I buy it… too expensive). Next time I’m going to try it your way – no milk, no frozen oranges.

        I’ve made the frozen banana ice cream before and loved it. Next time I make it, I’m going to try adding frozen strawberries.

        • Oh wow! Sorry to hear it didn’t turn out so well, Beth. I didn’t even consider the skins and stuff. I never added any milk or anything to it for fear that it would mess with the flavor. As for the vanilla, it’s best to stick with the vanilla flavored yogurt. The extract is extremely potent and just a drop could make the flavor too overwhelming not to mention, you’d miss out on all the benefits of the yogurt (texture and health wise). I didn’t want to juice oranges this time so I just bought a bottle of Minute Maid OJ without the pulp. It worked perfectly. I hope your next try works out much better!

  • Now how would you turn it into a strawberry julius??

    • Hi, Katy! Now you have my mouth watering! Just the idea sounds good! In order to turn it into a strawberry Julius, I’d remove the orange juice and ice and substitute frozen strawberries. Maybe add a tiny bit of vanilla soy milk or water if it’s too thick? I’m going to buy the stuff and try it out myself! Now I have all sorts of possible flavors running through my head! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Thanks so much for sharing! I created a version that has more of a creamy, shake like consistency that I thought I would share. It is off the charts YUMMY (and packed with vitamin C). It keeps me pretty full all morning. I cut up frozen orange juice concentrate into 6 slices (separating them by wax paper and storing them in the freezer,in layers). I also purchase the Dole Mandarin Slices in light syrup and freeze them in their juice, in little Glad containers. In the recipe, I use 1 slice of concentrate, 1 little container of frozen mandarin slices, 1 c. vanilla soy milk, and about 1/4 c. of vanilla low fat greek yogurt, and blend. I like the fact that you don’t have to use any ice or additional sweetener. I have also added fiber powder at times, to keep me fuller longer.

  • I love this diy smoothie! I used to make “Orange Julius” at home for my kids way back before we had such great yogurts available to us. how I did it then was 1 container of frozen Orange Juice concentrate, vanilla extract, powdered milk, water. I would blend it up and it turned frothy and yummy! on special occassions I’d slip some french vanilla ice cream, or 1 tsp. sugar, in. at that point it was more a desert than a healthy drink tho.
    Now I take a few spoonfuls of frozen orange juice concentrate, Vanilla and honey Greek Yogurt, 1/2 imitation vanilla extract and water in an individual smoothie serving cup. I screw the blade “top” to the cup, invert onto my bullet-style kitchen gadget and blend til creamy and frothy. I love it! kids are grown, but I still love my own orange julious!
