- Hawaii receives the most spam texts than any other state.
- Wyoming has the most romance scams, with Vermont coming in second.
- Online shopping scams seems to frequent New Hampshire the most. The states with higher median household incomes (we’re looking at you Vermont, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire), are in more danger of seeing online shopping scams.
- And lookout! There are 5 top brands that are most frequently linked with scams. They are Geek Squad, Amazon, Paypal, Facebook, and CashApp.
What Can We Do About It?
Be prepared! Protect yourself and your information. Be aware of scams in your state and educate yourself on how you can avoid or manage them if they do come up. One option is by using Secure Data Recovery, who can help encrypt your information and keep you safe. When I’ve been faced with annoying spam texts, I utilize these options. The Federal Trade Commission website has encouraged that if you receive a spam text:
- You can forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) which can help your wireless provider spot and block similar messages in the future.
- You are also able to report the text as junk or spam through the texting app you are using.
- Finally, at ReportFraud.ftc.gov you are able to report the message to the Federal Trade Commission
If you’re tired of receiving so many robocalls, download an app on your phone that will block those calls! It’s a quick and easy solution that could result in 99% less robocalls in your future. You can also call and register your phone number on the national Do Not Call list.
To protect your data on your devices, whether computer, cell phone, or other, here are some of our favorite encryption and password protectors to try as well:
-
For physical mail, we like to use the Identity Theft Protection Stamp Roller. To safeguard your information.
Now that you know, don’t walk, RUN and set up your protections for yourself! Scams may be increasing, but if we are aware and prepared, there’s no need to hide away from the online world.
Disclaimer from the Secure Date Recovery website about states that were left out of the ranking, “due to insufficient data: Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, Delaware, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Montana, Maine.”
