DIY Combination Deodorizing Disks AND Mouse Repellent!!
I live on a farm (something most of you know already), which sadly means we have field mice…LOTS of field mice! And, the only way to keep them out of our garage is to put that nasty rat poison in every little corner. This is an absolute nightmare for me because we also have four legged children; two Boston Terriers that like to get into every nook and cranny of the house. I watch them like a hawk every time they’re outside to make sure they never venture into our, always open in the summer, garage. Anyway, I don’t want to mess with poison anymore so, I made a natural mouse repellent which also happens to second as a deodorizing “disk”. I bet you didn’t know it was possible to have a product safe enough to have in your home that smells good AND repels mice! Awesome, huh?!
Here’s how to make your own 2-in-1 Deodorizing AND Rodent Repelling Disks!
*Note: this is the EXACT same way we created our homemade vapor shower disks! We’re just changing the “active” ingredient. Again, we are not going to do measurements. You really have to “eyeball it” to find the right consistency.
Here’s what you need:
- Baking Soda
- Water
- Peppermint Essential Oil (you can use extract too but it’s not as strong)
- Silicone Tray (ice cube or baking; it doesn’t matter which)
Pour a bit of water into a bowl and add your baking soda (doing it the other way around could result in WAY too much wasted baking soda).
You want to form a watery paste. If it is too thick, add a few more drops of water.
This is what you want your mixture to look like…
Once you have your baking soda paste ready, add SEVERAL drops of peppermint essential oil (or extract). Again, I didn’t count how many drops I used. I just added enough to make my eyes water.
Mix it thoroughly.
Next, spoon your paste into an ungreased silicone tray. I used my fancy Dollar Tree skull tray! I thought it was fitting for the mice. 😛
Once your tray is full, let it sit out on your counter for at least 12-24 hours. At 12 hours, they may still crumble when you attempt to take them out of the tray so, for extra “firmness” let it sit for the full 24.
When they are fully dry, carefully pop them out.
Now, place them where mice are entering your home (or garage in my case) and in stinky places like the trash can, diaper pails, or in the closet by the shoes!
Whoohoo! No more stink, no more worry about my four legged children, and no more mice all for a few pennies each! I’m calling this one a WINNER!

Fabulous idea. Thanks so much.
What scares the mice away the baking soda or the peppermint oil?
Hi, Chrystie! Sorry it took so long to get back to you! The message was sent to another folder. BOO! To answer your question, it is the peppermint oil that scares them off. Apparently, they aren’t fond of the scent. I’ve been using these in my garage and haven’t seen one yet!
Hello, Thank you for the post which is quick and simple.
My question is even though the smell deters the rodents, does this clay base melt in the heat or near heat? How long will the sent last before you have to pick up each one you put down and replace them again?
Thanx
As long as they stay dry, they will last for quite a while. I wouldn;t put them near a heat source. In a dry garage, I am sure they would last about a month!
This should work in my chicken coop too 💙
yes it should! awesome idea!
Its the peppermint oil.
Peppermint. It impedes their breathing
How long do these last? Do you just replace when the scent weakens?
Jenn, I’d toss them as soon as the scent starts disappearing. It’s really hard to tell for certain how long they will last since it really depends on your environment. They will last much longer in a dry environment as opposed to a moist one. I hope this helps! Thanks for reading! 🙂
Can you also use eucalyptus oil?
YES you can! Eucalyptus oil should work just the same!
Be careful. Eucalyptus can be toxic for dogs
Just made some, put in a tray & the oil is coming to the top. Did I do something wrong or will it absorb into the paste?
Hi Peggy! Is it a possible you used another brand in your discs? I had no issues with separation while doing it.
Used ‘Natures Truth’ only essential oil I found here. It did absorb into the mix but mine was crumbly so I guess I need to thin it down next time?! Thanks for your reply!
So these be good to use in my air vents? Could the air flow be not gd?
When the smell wears off you could use for cleaning
I’ve never done that but great idea!
How come the peppermint smell is not keeping my mice away?
How are you using it and how much are you using?
Can you use diatomaceous earth instead of baking soda?
Yes you can! When you combine it with the essential oil the diatomaceous earth becomes even more powerful! Try it out!
diatomaceous earth can get rid of mice? thought it was just for roaches
New house, 1st Mouse. Aaaahhhhh! They give me the heeby geebies. Poor dog didn’t understand why I screamed. Got my peppermint oil out and doused the whole inside of my house. I pray it works. Planning on making some of these disks also. Thanks.
I’ve used it before and it worked for me! You can do it!
Has this worked for you? I found a nice and I’m terrified and freaking out!
I would like to add something , I have read that baking soda can be deadly to dogs , in high quantities of course , but to think about it dogs do like peppermint and they don’t know any better not to eat the baking soda , so just wanted to share maybe for those of you who have dogs that like peppermint may want to keep them out of their reach
Hi, would this work for rats as well? Thanks in advance
Yes Doreen! It should work for both 🙂
How long does the tray take to become a solid?
At 12 hours it will be fairly solid but I would suggest waiting a full 24 hours to make sure it is extra firm and wont crumble!
i have also read that peppermint oil deters spiders. with those eight legged freaks looking for a warm place inside your home, how could you go wrong with something double duty!!!!!
Absolutely! Here’s our post on that! https://fabulesslyfrugal.com/natural-spider-repellent/
Does the diatomaceous earth harden after 24 hours like the baking soda does?
I don’t believe it does.
How does the DE work for mice??? I use it for fleas & it’s AWESOME for that! The mice are horrible, like I’ve never seen before & making me hate my house!!! UGH!!!!

Just had out ducts cleaned.. he said there were a few dead mice in there… I want to make sure it stays clean… thinking of just diluting peppermint with some water and spraying each vent… think that will work?
OMG! I live in a mobile home just outside of the city limits and we’ve had mice issues all winter. Got one brave little rodent who enjoys scaring me to death ever other morning. I’m so going to try this this weekend. Sick of the buggers chewing on stuff and leaving a stink. I had some extract that I put in my cabinets hoping just jumpstart the rodent migration from my home.
Oh that does NOT sound enjoyable! Let me know how it goes! You may need to find their home and kick them out. Yuck!
How long does the smell last?
Hi Cathy,
Thanks for the tips, didn’t have skulls but getting ready for Christmas so figured what the heck and made snowmen and Santa’s. Turned pretty good just the neck area was a little thin and their poor heads popped off, but they smell great!
Yay! So glad to hear it, Doug! 🙂
Hi there! Loved this article, and will definately try the cubes…..i have used peppermint oil with some success, but this sounds more effective than just spraying. I also use complexion pads instead of cotton balls, and place them in the heat vents, and behind the filter in my furnace.
Hi Faye, Glad you liked the article. That is a fab idea 💡 to use those pads. Thanks for the tip!
dont know if my 1st ? went through but will spearmint work
HI Thomas — That should work. I have always preferred spearmint to peppermint.
Peppermint oil is toxic to dogs.
