Make sure the pie crust is at room temperature before you begin. You can place the dough in the microwave and warm it up for 10-15 seconds on the defrost mode (30% power). If the pie crusts are not at room temperature, they will be difficult to unroll and may crack and break. If this happens, you can reform the pie crust. Simply get your finger slightly wet with water and lightly pinch the cracks back together.
Take the pie crust dough and unroll it onto a lightly greased surface. I used a cookie sheet.
Cut out the pastries. Lightly press the rectangular container*(see recipe notes) you are using onto the dough. I was able to get 5 rectangles on one pie crust. Take the pizza cutter and cut out the dough rectangles. Then, reform the dough to get the 6th pastry rectangle. I had to lightly wet the edges of the dough to get them to stick together before rolling out a new sheet.
Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400 °F.
Take three of the pastry rectangles and lightly wet the perimeter of each.
In the middle of the three pastries, place anywhere from 1/2 tbsp to 1 tbsp of jam/preserves (this depends on the size of your sheets). Spread out the jam to cover the middle portion of each of the sheets.
Take the other three sheets and place it on top of the sheets with jam. Pinch together the seams, adding any additional water to help it close. Seal it by pressing the sides together with a fork.
Cut a couple of slits into the top of the dough so it can breathe while cooking.
Place the pastries in a lightly sprayed and preheated air fryer basket. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray oil - such as avocado oil or olive oil.
Cook in the air fryer for 10 minutes at 350 °F, or until the pastry is golden brown to your liking. While this cooks, repeat for the other sheet of pie crust, if desired, or save the other pie crust for another time.
Remove from the air fryer and let it cool completely on a cooling rack. If you are in a pinch for time, I placed my pop tarts in the freezer for a couple of minutes to help.
Add the glaze and sprinkles to the top of the completely cooled pastries.
Glaze
Whisk together the glaze ingredients in a small bowl or until combined. Add any additional milk and vanilla until the glaze reaches desired consistency and taste.
Notes
*Rectangular shape cookie cutter or a container or a lid - you need this to cut out equal sized dough sheets. I found a plastic container that was roughly 2.5-3 inches by 4.5 inches. You can use any size you want, it just depends on how big you like your pastries. You can be as creative as you’d like for the inside filling of your pastries. For example, I had leftover peach slices from a cobbler recipe I was making and placed small peach slices with the peach preserve filling. This added a tasty and fresh flavor!
How long do I put pop tarts in an air fryer?
If you want to heat store-bought Pop Tarts in the air fryer, here's how:
Preheat the air fryer.
Add the Pop-Tart to the air fryer basket.
Air fry for 7 minutes at 350°F/175°C, or until warm and toasted to your liking. You do not need to flip because of the icing that is already on the Pop Tarts.
