Travel Tip Tuesday: Packing Lightly

Pack Light… Travel Far…

This afternoon my daughter and I will be hopping on a plane… all in the name of FruGAL travel of course. If you’re looking to save a few bucks on your next mini vacation (whether it’s to Antarctica or the beach) you’ll want to check back in for my daily Travel In Progress posts (T.I.P’s) over the next few days.  I’ll be highlighting possible fabulessly frugal ways to save on your next trip.  I’m not excatly sure what those tips will be yet… but hopefully you’ll be able to learn something from my upcoming  adventure 🙂  In the mean time… Here’s a peek inside what I’ve packed for this particular trip.

There are two things I always pack no matter what the destination…

#1 Snacks

#2 Travel Sized Products… all FREE of course 🙂

Packing snacks is a HUGE money saver…

I also like to pack instant oatmeal & soup because all you need to do is add a little hot water from the in room coffee/tea pot.

I paid less than $1.45 for all the food/snacks you see above 🙂

Another thing I’m very particular about when I travel is  not checking bags… It doesn’t matter where we’re traveling… I simply refuse to check my luggage… Mostly because I don’t want to have to stand in line to check the bag… or wait around in baggage claim for my bag to arrive… or even worse… have to deal with lost luggage.  Not to mention most airlines now charge you to check your bags.

Nope… no matter the destination… I’m taking a backpack 🙂

Anyone care to guess where I’m headed?

You wouldn’t check a bag if you went overseas for 3 weeks?

  • Gina R.

    I’m going to guess Disney!

  • Sara D

I am guessing the beach. 🙂

  • Kelli Welborn

Well with all the black and gray I am hoping you are not going to a funeral.

  • Joni

You are packing all black clothes. You going to a funeral?

  • Jen Lewis

Vegas!!!!! I heard it’s fun for kids too 🙂 Although those don’t look like walking shoes and I’ve heard you walk ALOT in Vegas………………..

  • jadell

to a race somewhere… or maybe to check out a college with your daughter?

  • shelli

My guess is that y’all are going to a SPA or yoga resort.

  • Lori

    Somewhere beachy, Cali?

  • Heather

I would guess somewhere warm based off of the clothes, so I’m going with beach in CA also…

  • Heather

Toss in some running shoes and I am guessing…,Marathon…?! Or else a fun-in-the-sun “dumpster dive” in someplace warm…like Hawaii?? Just guessing! 🙂

  • Helen in Meridian

What, no underpants? Are you going commando?

  • Nik Davis

Someplace warm I would think. I have that same black top if it is old navy. I am looking into going to US Virgin Islands (do not want to shell out for a passport for four) so any deal ideas help on flights. Can’t wait to see your tips. We just spent spring break in Vegas, did grocery shopping and saved some $$.

  • blue

You must shop a lot and save every darn penney ? your kitchen stove is more expensive than most people make in a year?? you so remind me of a woman they say hoards on that program on cable extreme cuponing? how old are you anyway??? remember many are unemployed and don’t care to dumpster dive for coupons and or food????????? hmmmmm……………your column to me is not helpful, why don’t you donate time and all that food you stockpile to people who truly need it…all that formual to a food bank, when nurses and health professional suggest breastfeeding really?????????? I spend most of my time, helping, battered women, food for women and children and I work tooo….if I got the food you do dumpster diving for coupons, food etc. the people here would be eating like the royal family..I refuse to dumpster dive and as for asking neighbors for their inserts, they don’t take the paper at all, can’t afford it and steal it from the public library to boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, normally I ignore what you say, but constantly being negative towards some one who helps all the other couponers who read this blog is not being polite. If it does not help you don’t read it or comment towards it please. Mavis is awesome and you can tell she truly tries to add some flare to the tips she is giving us. Couponing is a blessing to my family. Mavis’ stories and tips are uplifting and inspiring to us who are just getting started. Thank you Mavis!

Please, please block this woman from commenting anymore! She has a personal vendetta against Mavis for unknown reasons. She just says the same thing over and over again, and I am so tired of getting annoyed when I read her comments. The reason I like this site so much is because of how positive it is!

Poor Mavis. I am starting to think you have a stalker. Is there such a thing as a blog stalker? Just keep on sharing your stuff, Mavis. I really enjoy your posts!

    • Cathy

      Hi there myssssss,

My name is Cathy, and I am the founder and co-owner of this blog. I started this blog in October of 2008 just so I could share what I was learning with my family, friends, and people from church. 8 months later, my husband lost his job. Last fall, we nearly lost our home (but didn’t, thanks to a generous fundraiser my fab fruGALS put on for my family). We’ve struggled, we’ve cut, and we’ve gone with out. In fact, at this very moment, my husband is still unemployed! He is back in school full time seeking a 2nd degree that will hopefully get him a good job.

In the mean time, THIS blog is supporting my family, paying our bills, and putting food on our table! I know others consider this blog and what we do here a blessing… but I am the one that is blessed. Because of this blog and all of our readers, I can care for my large family, and stay at home with my children.

What is the point in sharing my story with you? There are a few reasons:

#1 – I started couponing out of need. I know it is fun and rewarding and there is much you can do to bless the lives of others thanks to couponing. That being said, just because Mavis has a nice oven and pretty counter tops doesn’t mean that I resent the fact that she enjoys couponing. She does a fantastic job at it! Not only is she fun to read, but she inspires me! And I know she inspires and entertains many others! Mavis coupons more than I do because quite frankly, I’m too busy caring for my family and blogging about the deals… I don’t have time to go get them! Just because she get’s more deals than I do, and has a nicer home than I do, and has less children than I do, doesn’t give me a reason to resent her. I’m proud to have Mavis on our team!

#2 – Over the past 2.5 years of this blogs life, we have evolved into one of the most positive coupon communities I’ve come across! 99% of our readers who comment are kind, curteous, and thoughtful. They help each other out. They share the deals they are finding. They lift and encourage. And that is one of the reasons I LOVE working on this blog! It’s because of the FABULOUS readers! We would ask you to respect what we’ve built here and do your best to keep our blog community positive. Personal attacks just aren’t necessary!

#3 – Of course, as owners of this blog, we have the power to edit, moderate, and delete comments. But we haven’t. We feel it’s important to let people express themselves and we encourage comments. We’ve talked to Mavis about your rude comments and told her the second they start to bother her we’d block you. Guess what, she doesn’t care! She thinks it’s funny the way you spend your time being angry about her. So this comment comes from ME. Not from her. And sadly, your constant attacking and abuse has gotten out of hand. Therefore, we kindly ask that when you choose to state your opinions, please do not attack Mavis, any of our contributors, nor our readers who leave comments. If it continues, we’ll have no choice but to block your comments.

Thanks for respecting the community we’ve built here and playing by our Fabulessly Frugal rules! We <3 our readers!

I now know why I adore this blog so much: its founders are smart, kind, funny, considerate … and tough when need be, and all of that shows in the blog itself. Thank you for your wise but firm response to the one negative soul on here. You and your team do a terrific job, you are at the top of my “Favorites” list! 🙂 Thank you for all you do!

  • Cathy

Mavis! Monica just recently introduced me to those Pretzel M&M’s and I’m in LOVE with them! Seeing your picture here makes me want more! 🙂 Monica, bring some when you come over tomorrow!
