Top Ten Summer Camp Essentials…

Are you kids headed to summer camp?  It seems the “Camp Essentials” list I print out after registering my kids each year gets longer and longer.  Luckily I shop in my Pajamas so I don’t have to worry about making numerous trips to the store. 🙂

Here’s my Top Ten list of essential summer camp items.

#1 A “Mummy Style” sleeping bag.  We’ve used these types of sleeping bags for years… Not only are they light weight, but they’re less bulky than cotton and dry quickly too.

#2 Extra PillowcaseI send my kids to camp with an extra pillow case and a couple of sharpie pens… It’s a fun and easy way  to have all their cabinmates write their phone numbers and funny little messages on.  And it’s a great way for your kids to remember the new friends they made at camp.

#3 Shoes, Shoes and more Shoes! flip flops, water shoes, hiking boots and old sneakers… It seems like no matter how many pairs of shoes you pack they all come home wet and stinky… so the more merrier in my opinion.

#4 Toiletries. If you’re anything like me your kids will show up to camp with a ziplock baggie filled with a variety of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and  toothpaste thanks to all the free samples your scored online.  About the only thing you’ll need to purchase is sunscreen and bug repellent. 🙂

#5 Clothing that dries quickly. This is HUGE.  There’s nothing worse than packing a backpack full of cotton t-shirt and shorts and getting them all soaked the first day then having to wear them all week long because that’s all you brought.  Learn from this former Girl Scout.  Pack lightweight clothing.

#6 Back Pack. Not only am I a fan of packing light… But I’m also a big fan of keeping all my gear in one bag.  It makes camp life simple if you can keep all your belongings together in one spot.

#7 Flash Light. Something small and simple to take along when you have to use the restroom in the middle of the night. 🙂

#8 Mess Kit. Some camps require this and others don’t.  But the one thing my kids pack each is the Coleman Camper’s Utensil Set.

#9 Boredom Busters. Journal books, reading books, Mad Libs and stationary, craft kits, and a board game or to.  Last year my kids each brought 20 Questions and had a blast.

#10 Supplies for Skit Night. You can probably head to the dollar store or shop in your closet for things like goofy hats, feather boa’s, costumes and rubber snakes.  Of course they’re not “essential” camp items… but they do make camp life a little more exciting. 🙂

So there you have it… My top ten list of Summer Camp Essentials.  Did I forget anything?  Leave your summer camp “must haves” in the comment section below to help other parents out who might have a new camper this year.
