The Entitlement Trap

Why am I posting about a parenting book?

Yes, I realize this is a coupon/frugal living blog.    But honestly, we’re all about teaching around here!  😀  Saving money and being responsible with it is a value I want to teach to my children.  A friend of mine recently shared a review of this book.   It sounds like this book teaches us parents exactly how to do this with some proven methods.

Here is the review…

I have really enjoyed reading this book!  The sub title is How to Rescue Your Child with a New Family System of Choosing, Earning, and Ownership.  If you’ve read some of the Eyre’s other books, you see that some of the ideas are not new… but the systems the authors describe are so POWERFUL!   I am more excited about my role as a mother and a parent after reading this book.

The authors first address the problem of Entitlement.  They describe entitlement as “the attitude of children who think they can have, should have, and deserve whatever they want, whatever their friends have-and that they should have it now, and not have to earn it or give up anything for it.  They think they should be able to do whatever they want, whatever their friends do, now and without a price.”   One of my favorite thoughts from the book is that we, as parents, seem to be working for our kids’ approval, rather than their working for ours.  That idea rang so true to me.

The authors give so many GREAT ideas on how to help our children shift from the lack of responsibility that accompanies the entitlement issue, to taking real ownership of their own “stuff”, money, and eventually, their ideas, education, etc.  I love their ideas on creating a family legal system, a family economy, and family traditions to bind a family together.  They share great stories of parents who have implemented these ideas and what changes they are seeing in their children.
