Summer Reading {Book Ideas For The Kids}

Summer reading for kids

My kids love to read and I’m always on the look out for new books for them to dive into.  Especially in the summer time!

Here are some of our new (and old) favorite books:

Michael Vey (ages 11 and up will enjoy)

My 13 year old daughter just read this book.  She couldn’t put it down!  One night she stayed up until 2am reading it!  My 16 year old son and 10 1/2 year old daughter are going to read it next.  I’m hoping to read it soon too!

Percy Jackson Series (ages 10 and up)

My 4 oldest children have read or are reading this series.  They say the movie isn’t nearly as good as the books (isn’t that always the case?).  Right now you can get all three books in the series on Amazon for $13.59 (paperback boxed set).  In fact, my nearly 9 and 11 year old son and daughter each have a copy of the book and are reading it at the same time (they enjoy talking about it together too).

Warriors Series (ages 8-12)

When my oldest was in 3rd grade he started reading this huge series of books and loved them.   Over the past year or so my 10 year old daughter has been reading these and loved them as well.  I don’t know about your kids, but my kids LOVE books that are in a series!

There are several series with in this family of  Warriors books:

Heros of Olympus Series (ages 10 and up)

Another favorite in my household.  This series is a sequel to the Percy Jackson series.

The Vanishing Game (12 and up)

I got to read a book!   In March I was ill and on bed rest for more than a week.  This is one of the books I enjoyed reading!  I enjoyed all the twists and turns and have it on a list of books for my two oldest to read. It’s full of suspense, and an unexpected ending that left me floored!

And of course The Hunger Games and Harry Potter have been favorites as well!

What books do your kids love?  I’d love more suggestions to keep the summer reading going at my house!

I also found that Amazon has a Summer Reading for Kids Page with book ideas from baby to young adult!

Donita K. Paul has a great fantasy series out. They were popular with the kids because magic/dragons and I thought they were very well written. They remind me of C.S. Lewis.

  • Karen Pullam

How about Roald Dahl? Many great titles!

  • Good recs…my little ones are in on the summer reading program at the library and some of these are perfect for them. The goal is to read 20 minutes a night…ha, in this family we’ve killed that before breakfast is over. :p
