Spice Rack Markers…Organize for Less!
Organize the Craft Drawer in your home for less!
I have been meaning to do this project for quite a while now, but several weeks have slipped by in the process. Until today….this morning I went to grab a red marker from our marker/colored pencil/crayon drawer. It was overflowing with all sorts of crafty things that my kids LOVE to create with. But this was just too much. I needed a little bit more organization in the classroom. Does your craft drawer look like mine?
To start off, you’ll need to grab the supplies you’ll need. Wash and try the can that you will use, then peel off the labels. Gather several pieces of scrapbook paper. These are the ones that I have laying around. For the spice rack I used one I purchased from IKEA a few weeks ago, but you can find them pretty much everywhere and you can even keep your eyes peeled for a super deal on one at a thrift store! I found a spice rack on Amazon that I am thinking would be perfect to empty out and organize that craft drawer altogether! Not pictured is the acrylic paint I used to to paint the shelf and the gold glitter that I added on a whim. 🙂
To begin with, cut the paper in to strips so you can have a straight edge on the top and bottom of the can. Cover the entire can in Modge Podge and then wrap your first strip of paper and paint over the paper to seal it on.
Continue wrapping the paper until the can is completely covered and then apply a generous layer of the Modge Podge and set aside to dry. Repeat these steps with all of the cans you have. Once they are dry you can also smooth out any dimples or waves in the paper. I just rolled the cans in my hands to get the smoothness that I wanted.
While the Modge Podge is drying you can paint the spice rack you will hang on the wall if desired. I chose to paint mine because I wanted a bit of color in the classroom. Then, while it was drying my daughter mentioned that it would be fun if it has glitter…tadaa! Glitter! I sprinkled some glitter on and I was done. If you would like to seal the glitter in, you can also apply a layer of Modge Podge to the spice rack once it is dry.
The Spice Rack that I purchased will only fit 5 cans, so I chose to combine colors, to make the most of the space available. I mixed red/pink, orange/brown, yellow/green, blue/teal, purple/gray/black. My kids liked this color combination as well and I’m *hoping* that by color coordinating the cans to the markers it will be an easy job of putting away markers that have been used.
This project helped a TON to reduce the amount of markers in our classroom. For the ones that cannot fit I put them away to replace the ones in the cans now once they dry out or inevitably get lost. 🙂 This could also be used to organize crayons, colored pencils, or by category as well: pencils, scissors, glue sticks, markers, and more!
