Baking From Scratch {Whole Grain Pizza Dough Recipe}

Once a week, usually on the weekend, our family carries on the tradition of pizza and a movie. Anyone else? We will often find a movie at the Redbox for the kids and make homemade pizza. Lately, we have been stuck on a creamy-chicken-bacon-garlic pizza, similar to what you would find at Papa Murphy’s.

I like to make it homemade because I often times have on hand basic ingredients to make pizza, and while I LOVE Papa Murphy’s, I wish they had a (partially) whole wheat or whole grain pizza crust. Thus, we have homemade pizza.

Modified from my Kitchenaid Best Loved Recipes cookbook, here’s the recipe (makes 1 large thick crust or 2 medium thin crust pies):

Whole Grain Pizza Dough

Step 1:

Dissolve the yeast in a warmed mixer bowl with the water.

Step 2:

Add the salt, olive oil, whole wheat flour, 7 grain cereal and 1 cup of the white flour.

Step 3:

After it mixes, continue to add white flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and cleans the sides of the mixer.

Step 4:

Then, add a small amount of oil to the bowl, place the dough in, flip it once, cover it, and place it in a slightly warmed (but turned off) oven for an hour.

Step 5:

Once raised, punch it down and roll it out on a baking stone.

Step 6:

Bake the dough alone at 500 degrees for about 10 minutes (and sometimes, if you’re feeling particularly indulgent,  add some olive oil to the top of the crust).

Step 7:

Then add the toppings and bake again for about 15 minutes. I generally try to let the pizza cool for a few minutes before serving, but my husband is a little impatient and goes to town on it right away. Who can resist?!?!? And who can stop at just one pizza, right? Here’s a pepperoni pie for the kids! Enjoy!
