Simple Blackberry Crisp Recipe + A Giveaway!

It’s no secret I freeze a lot of produce in the summer time, especially fruit.Β  I do this mostly because I’m a tad bit on the frugal side. πŸ˜‰ And also preserving summers bounty as it ripens makes preparing side dishes and desserts easy peasy all winter long because my freezer is filled to the gills with berries, peaches, beans, swiss chardΒ  and what ever else I’ve managed to grow, forage or buy inexpensively over the summer months.

As I drove home yesterday I noticed my favorite blackberry patch was practically overflowing with ripe, juicy berries.Β  So I grabbed a few containers and headed off to pick my fair share of berrylicious goodness.

Blackberry Crisp:Β  In your favorite pie plate (or casserole dish) add enough blackberries to fill your baking dish.Β  About 4 cups.Β  Then gently toss the berries with 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour and 4 thin pats of butter.

Then in a microwaveable bowl melt 1/4 cup butter.Β  To the melted butter add 3 Oat Revolution Instant Oatmeal packets (that you scored for free of course) and still until the oatmeal mixture and butter is combined.

Spread the oatmeal mixture over your berry mixture and bake @ 350 degrees for approx 45 minutes.

Cool and serve with vanilla ice cream. πŸ™‚

The Giveaway: This week I am giving away a copy of my new favorite berry cookbook (which oddly enough I DID NOT use for this particular recipe) πŸ™‚

The Berry Bible: With 175 Recipes Using Cultivated and Wild, Fresh and Frozen Berries

In The Berry Bible, author Janie Hibler gets to the heart of these summer fruits, from their health benefits to their genus to how they are best put to use in the kitchen. An award-winning cookbook author and authority on the foods of the Pacific Northwest, Hibler offers 175 recipes, along with 68 full-color identification photographs and an A-to-Z encyclopedia that details well-known varieties such as blueberries and blackberries and lesser-known cultivars such as manzanitas and Juneberries.

Movie version, not the book version πŸ™‚

  • Helen in Meridian

Are your arms all scratched up today? When I lived in Portland , we would go behind the old White Stag clorhing plant to find loads and loads of blackberries, but oh, the prickles hurt a lot.

  • Melissa

Well I first believed it when I read the book, but since the movie was so close to the book, I’d have to say Anne of Green Gables. I even traveled to Prince Edward Island when I graduated college and I still felt that connection.

  • Analisa

Ben Gates from National Treasure. Even though he is a guy and I’m not, we both have a passionate love of history! I am obsessed with history and always enjoy a good conspiracy theory, just like Ben. πŸ˜‰

  • Heather I

The mom on cheaper by the dozen, although I do not have 12 kids, I have two boys that keep me active, and a very silly husband, she seemed to find humor in the “chaos” which is something I like to do to πŸ™‚

  • C. H.

I think Emma Thompson as Karen in Love Actually. It was very painful to watch yet so very true.

  • Barb H

I don’t think I’ve seen any movie characters who are like me–unless it’s in my dreams. πŸ™‚

  • Cheryl H

Sally Field as M’Lynn in Steel Magnolias.

  • Kathy

Michelle Pfieffer’s character in One Fine Day. crazy worker – crazy mom just trying to make it work. .. and when I do get a moment of time with my husband at the end of the day – I am just trying desperately to stay awake!

  • Becky

M’Lynn from Steel Magnolias, because I’m constantly worrying about my daughter and I’ve been told that my hair sometimes looks like a brown football helmet =)

I feel I most relate to Sarah Jessica Parker’s character in her new movie I Don’t Know How She Does It. I’m a working mom who’s dealt with everything from head lice during a meeting with clients to bringing my new babies to work with me. Eventhough the movie hasn’t come out yet I know her character all too well!

  • Michele Ruiz

Diane Lane in the perfect storm because it shows she has a strong heart and mind to do things in troubled times

  • nicole goins

    Dori from finding nemo πŸ™‚

  • april carrasco

My husband says Kathleen Turner in Serial Mom:) I kind of agree, I would do anything for my kids!

  • Sara

I know what character I am not like, Karen Von Blixen the Baroness in the movie Out of Africa. She was so brave moving to Africa and fending off lions and living on her own out there. I love her ability to tell the most amazing stories, with sadness and gratitude in her voice. I am still a little afraid of the dark at 32. haha!

  • Heather

I think I’m like emma stone in most of her movies, Confident, Witty, and a Go-Getter!!!

  • bess

all i can think of are disney movies! so, i’d say meg from ‘hercules’ – she’s cynical and sarcastic, but deep down believes in true love. :)!

My husband has nicknamed me ‘rabbit’ from Alice in Wonderland.” The ‘Im late im late im late
seems to rule me,but daily a reminder to slow down and enjoy my 5 wonderful little boys before its to late:)

  • Angela

Uma Therman in Motherhood as Eliza Welsh- All the crazy hoops she jumps as a mother and little reminders she finds to bring her back to reality- This movie made me laugh out loud at how much our crazy lives are alike as mothers.

  • Sarah

Hmmmm….Reese Witherspoon of Sweet Home Alabama. I think my ascent is a little worse tho. Lol

  • boonie bargan hunter

since you asked that i really had to sit down and think…….The only one that kept coming to mind was Erin Brockovich. Most times i dont know when to keep my mouth shut, have a tendancy to be a little on the trashy side and am always fighting for the little person. Thats where the big mouth thing comes in handy. Now if i only had her figure….

  • Marie

Sandra Bullock in Two Weeks Notice.

  • Darlene

i think I am most like Tina Faye in Date Night because if it’s gonna happen, it’ll happen to me. It doesn’t matter how crazy it seems.

  • Terri

Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider. At least thats my fantasy!

  • melanie

Jane Bennet from the long version (BBC, I think) of Pride and Prejudice. Quiet, and always thinks the best of everybody, even those who probably don’t deserve it- surely there was just some sort of mistake…

  • KD

Dorcas Lane in Larkrise to Candleford. If you have not seen this BBC show, and you are obsessed with all things BBC, you will love it! I’m like Dorcas Lane, because I’m bossy and in charge, but in a nice way. πŸ™‚

  • Marianne

In Ever After with Drew Barrymore, I would be her step-sister, the nicer one. Odd, but her love of food just speaks to me.

  • Heydi Smith

Giselle from Enchanted. Although I don’t look like her, apart from my hair, I am very enthusiastic, positive and sure of what’s right and wrong, even when other people are bewildered by me. I always try to find ways to make things better even when people say it’s impossible, it just seems easy to me.

  • Samantha P

Mines not movie its TV show and I’m a lot like Monica on Friends.

  • gerbilmom

Laura Croft-because she loves to explore and can kick some butt!!

  • Ambur Quijada

My Husband would jokingly say Mommy Dearest but I think I am most like Sarah Jessica Parker in the newest movie “I don’t know how she does it”

  • Heather L

Ok, not a movie, but tv. I think I act a lot like George Costanza on Seinfeld. I am frugal of course, but if I saw a chocolate eclair on top of the trash, I think I would eat it too. Couldn’t waste a $3 eclair now could we?
