Caramel Apples 15

I love caramel apples. Especially when they have chocolate and other yummy candy toppings on them. Dipping apples seems like such a pain. My friend Stephanie gave me this idea. Something we like to call Caramel Nachos!

6 Minute Caramel Recipe

1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

Combine all ingredients together in a glass bowl. Microwave for 6 minutes. Take out every 2 minutes and stir ingredients together. Towards the end of the cycle the glass bowl gets very hot! Be sure to have a hot pad or towel available for handling the hot bowl.

Apples for Caramel Apples

You can use any apple you like to make caramel apples. The preferred apple is the green apple or granny smith.
We usually just use which ever apples we can find  on sale.
The perfect tool for cutting the apples is a apple corer/slicer.

Toppings for Caramel Apples

Milk Chocolate
White Chocolate
Crushed Oreos
Crushed Candy Bars

You do not have to use all of these toppings. I don’t. Use what you like, what you can find on sale or what you have on hand. All of the toppings pictured I had on hand in my pantry.

Assembling Caramel Apple Nachos

When your caramel recipe is ready drizzle the caramel with a spoon over the apples. The caramel will be hot so be careful. If you let it cool too much it will start to set up before you can coat your apples.
Melt your chocolate in the microwave 30 seconds at a time stirring every 30 seconds. Drizzle over caramel with a spoon.

While chocolate is wet and caramel is still soft sprinkle your favorite topping over the apples. This is my favorite combination: chocolate, caramel, coconut and almonds.

For a more festive Halloween look I let my kids get involved. They loved adding marshmallows and Halloween sprinkles.

My youngest had a great idea of using kabob skewers  to serve the apples.

We also discovered that this recipes makes great traditional caramel apples. We happened to have 1,000 craft sticks at our house so we just placed a popsicle stick in the apples and dipped them in the caramel. I did not have any parchment paper on hand and I found that my silpat mat was a perfect place to let the apples cool. They did not stick to the mat one bit!
