Patriotic Punch Recipe
Festive drink for the 4th of July!
This is a really cute way to serve punch at any patriotic party, especially for the 4th of July! The layered look of this punch is possible because the liquids with lower sugar content will layer on top of those with higher sugar content. But there are few tips and tricks to help you get it right the first time around!
You can choose any drinks that your heart desires. Look for sale prices and coupons for your favorite flavors! Because there are not that many great options for blue drinks, you might want to choose that one first and then work around the sugar content of that drink. You’ll want to find a red drink with higher sugar content and then a clear or white drink with less sugar than the other two.
By the way, I actually ended up adding a few drops of blue food coloring to the G2 drink (after I took the picture above). I think it looks better as a darker blue layer, so I think that was a good move. Sports drinks are a great option for the blue layer!
I used Hawaiian Punch for my red layer. It is usually cheap, has plenty of sugar to be the bottom layer, and I think it brings a nice fruity flavor to the drink. 🙂
For the clear or white layer at the top, just find a drink that has the less sugar than the blue layer. A diet lemon-lime soda is an easy option and it adds the carbonation zing that makes the drink even more fun. If you want to skip the top layer, you can just count the ice as your white.
After trying to layer the punch just right a few times too many, I now have a few additional tips that may help you to be successful more quickly than me…
First of all, it helps if your layering drinks are cold before you start pouring. Then the ice will not melt as quickly while you are adding the liquids. As the ice melts, your layers may start to blend more. So, have plenty of ice on hand and keep the liquids in the refrigerator until you are ready to start pouring.
These star ice cubes would be so cute!
You need to pour the liquids slowly and onto an ice cube that is near the edge of the cup. Pouring onto an ice cube helps keep the liquid from penetrating the layer below.
There you go! Kids and adults will love it!
