Get a head start on busy mornings with DIY Smoothie Freezer Packs.  Once you’ve got them put together and frozen, all you need is 2 cups of liquid and a blender and breakfast is served.  Watch for deals on fresh or frozen fruit, and quart size zip-top bags.  My grandkids love to help make smoothie packs and the possibilities are endless!

Green smoothies are a nutritious way to start the day.   Buying big bags of greens on sale saves money, but often they don’t keep for more than a few days.  Before it goes bad, freeze it along with fruit you may have leftover from a recipe.  Bananas that are overripe, wilting strawberries, or too much avocado to use, add them to a DIY Smoothie Freezer Pack bag.  It’s a great way to save them until you shop for everything else.

I believe our bodies need protein and  a smoothie is a great way to add it along with milled flaxseed.  It takes longer for our bodies to digest protein so it sticks with us longer.  I always add some to assist in keeping blood sugar levels even too. There is plenty of natural sugar in our fruits and vegetables, however if you like your smoothie a little sweeter, I recommend liquid stevia, pure maple syrup, or honey.  Our bodies are able to digest and use natural sweeteners as compared to refined sugar.

Here’s what I do; plan on 2 cups of greens, 2 cups of fruit, 1 cup of a protein source, 2 tablespoons of flaxseed meal, and  2 cups of liquid for each smoothie pack.  If I combine banana, pineapple, mango, and clementines, I like to add a little unsweetened coconut which really enhances the tropical flavor of my smoothie.  Be creative in your combinations.

In place of ice cream treats, try blending up a smoothie pack with 1 cup of liquid and 5 ice cubes, YUM!

Preparing For the Freezer:

Label a quart size zip-top bag add 1 cup of protein.  Next add 2 tablespoons of milled flaxseed.  Now add 2 cups of washed fruit, I almost always add 1/2 of a banana and 5 pineapple chunks with 2 or 3 other kinds of fruit.  Top with 2 cups of fresh spinach or kale.  Remove as much air as you can from the bag, I use a straw, and then seal.  Place in freezer.

Prepare after Freezing:

Add Smoothie Freezer Pack to a blender.  Add 2 cups of liquid and blend till smooth.  Pour into cups and enjoy!
