Receipe: Delicious Homemade Rolls {Cinnamon Roll Recipe Too!}

This is the roll recipe I’ve grown up with and it comes from my mothers dear friend, Helen Wilkes.  Tried and tested and the best roll recipe I’ve ever tasted!  The key to a good light and fluffy roll is sticky dough!

Delicious Roll Recipe

  • 2 Tablespoons dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1-1/2 cup scalded milk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 6-7 cup flour

  • Sprinkle 2 TBS. sugar over yeast and water, stir  it up and let it sit.
  • In a separate bowl, scald milk (about 4 min. in microwave) then cool a little and add the oil, ¼ c. sugar and 2 tsp salt.
  • Stir in 1 cup of flour, then the 2 beaten eggs.
  • Add the yeast mixture and then stir in 5-6 more cups of flour, stirring after each cup.  Don’t add too much flour as the dough should be very soft and fairly sticky.
  • Cover and raise for about 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours until double in size.
  • Roll out and shape rolls.  Let rise again.
  • Bake at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes.  Makes 3 dozen.

You can also use this dough for some amazing cinnamon rolls!

The Best Cinnamon Rolls Ever:

Follow the directions above for roll dough.  After the dough rises the first time, roll dough (divide in half first) on generously floured surface into a rectangle about 17×9 inches and ½ inch thick. Melt ½ cube butter and spread half on 1st rectangle. Sprinkle 1 cup sugar over butter and cinnamon (not too heavy) to taste. Roll up from short edge. Slice (electric knife or thread). Repeat with other half of dough. Put on greased cookie sheet and cover with towel. Let raise again (45 minutes to 1 hour). Bake 1 sheet at a time at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes (until browned but not too brown on top).  Drizzle icing (powdered sugar and milk) over top or brush it on while hot.
