Rethink Holiday Generosity

It’s that time of year again! Time to think about upcoming travel, food, gifts, and everything else that comes along with the holidays. I love it! How many of you have already started buying Christmas presents?! I’ve got a stash going already! But when it comes down to it, I know that the presents are not the most important part. Sometimes we get swept up in the generosity of the season and we end up overspending.

In February 2016, SunTrust launched the onUp Movement to inspire Americans to take a step toward financial confidence – to spend more time focusing on the moments that matter. The most meaningful gift you can give your loved ones (and yourself) isn’t a present you buy—it’s presence in every meaningful moment. Would you agree?

Rethink Holiday Generosity means going into this season with confidence to focus on the moments that matter most. Now is a good time for all of us to start making a plan for how we can make this happen! Change how you spend your money and time this holiday season, so you’re less stressed and more focused on the moments that matter.

I have a challenge for you!

Use a budget worksheet to plan your holiday spending this year. You’ve got this!

It’s pretty comprehensive, yet simple to use! This holiday budget worksheet lays it all out, I can enter in my budget for travel, entertainment, and all that goes into gifting (charity, wrapping paper, tipping the UPS guy, and more). And here are some savings tips to help with your budgeting…

Seasonal Savings Tips

  • Plan your purchases before you start shopping.
  • Open a dedicated savings account, then set up an automatic deposit from your paycheck each month to help save for the holidays.
  • Shop Cyber Monday for shoes, clothing, and beauty.
  • Thanksgiving and Black Friday are good days to shop for electronics and garden items.
  • Switch to energy efficient holiday lights.
  • Enjoy a home-cooked meal, potluck-style, instead of take-out or sit-down dining.
  • Don’t spend money on a centerpiece or fancy dinnerware.

Food, gifts, and charitable donations are definitely a part of my plan this holiday season. We’re making it priority to help a few families in need, including a local refugee family. I’m glad to be able to help others and it will be a good experience for my family. I hope to have a lot of opportunities for meaningful moments with each other! What kind of meaningful moments are you looking forward to this holiday season?
