How to make a diaper Cake 550

One of my friends recently had a baby shower and I made her a diaper cake.  Since this is her 4th child, instead of spending extra money on little toys to embellish the “cake” I decided to spend money on a fancy cake stand she can use later for entertaining instead.

I am a visual learner so I took a ton of pictures for this post. 😉

I started with a large cake stand and placed 3 boxes of Desitin in the center.

Next I placed a thick rubber band around the boxes.

Rolled up a newborn diaper, secured it with a small rubber band and placed the rolled diaper between the large rubber band and box of Desitin.

Added another diaper…

And another until I had surrounded the Desitin boxes with rolled diapers.

I then placed another large rubber band around the first layer of diapers…

And added a second row of rolled diapers.

For the second layer I placed another large rubber band towards the top of the Desitin boxes and added more diapers until the boxes were surrounded.

I then used a hot glue gun to secure a bottle of Johnson’s Natural’s Body to the top of the boxes.  I added a large rubber band around the bottle and added more diapers.

After all 3 layers were complete I tied pink curling ribbon around the rubber bands to hide them.

Woo Hoo…  Finished at last!

Have YOU made a diaper cake before?

I have made quite a few diaper cakes! I love to make them. They are so much fun to make!

  • Crystel

I added lots more to mine though!

    I would show pics but I don’t know how…

I get lots of cute things to decorate them at our local $1 store.

My mom made a bridal shower cake for my sister in law using tea towels, at the top she hud utensils sticking out the top. You could get very creative with these.

That’s really cute. I like how simple/grown up it looks compared to the ones that are loaded with stuff! Although, “stuff” is fun to get, I’d rather have a cake stand! Good job.

    • Michelle

I agree. Give me he stuff I use. So much of my baby shower “goodies” got eithe regifted or donated. I just don’t use much more then the basics. I’d rather have the cake stand to put the birthday cakes on.

Thanks for posting this!! I bought the white cake stands at Costco and wanted to go back and get the green ones but I have forgotten to do it and these pics reminded me!

I made a Tricycle diaper cake for a family friend/babysitter of ours who had her first son in September. It was cute…if I do say so myself! 🙂

    • Cara

      Hi Heather,

Santa brought me this fine Costco set of two cake stands in Martha Stewart Green. Did you use the large or the small cake stand for this, like I am going to give mine away…NOT.

  • Meridian Mama

Very nice! And such a cute cake stand! Can you share where you got it?

My friend made an 11 tier diaper cake for my babyshower using newborn and size 1, 2 and 3 diapers. She actually bought a small round folding table to put it on as a cakestand! She didn’t roll each diaper individually…she swirled them into big cake rounds and tied them with wide pink satin ribbons. It was awesome!

  • Katrina

I always put blankets on mine to cover the diapers, They do cost more to make but I think they are a lot cuter. I also use a bottle in the middle to hold the tiers together, although a few tubes of desitin work great too. Never though of that.

I did a 4 tiered diaper cake with a friend that was so much fun to make! We did individually rolled diapers with ribbon around each one. I like your desitin idea! That would have saved us some time 😀 Our friend really likes purple instead of pink for her baby girl so we found purple items (and made purple booties and a beanie) to attach to it. We covered the diapers in a white felt cloth so it looked like fondant, attached purple, white ribbon, and little gems around each layer and around the whole thing. It turned out so pretty!

    Thanks for great ideas!

For my 65th birthday, would you make me one with XL Depends ?

  • Ashley

My SIL makes them and she takes baby socks and rolls them into flowers to decorate it, and puts uses hair bands instead of rubber bands. She made one for my baby shower and it was adorable and so useful!

  • stacey

Looks great, about how much does this cost to do?
