Natural Bug Bite Stick

“Mom! A bug bit me!  Now it itches really bad!”  You know, that no matter how diligent you are with the bug repellent, or how great you are about keeping the Bug Repelling Candles going, you are going to get bitten by a bug.  The darn things will sneak into your house, slip into a hidden crevice, and pop out and bite you… while you are sleeping.  Because that’s just the way they are.  Or you could be like me, and forget to put on the bug spray.

We have three different Bug Bite remedies for you.  The first is an All Natural Soothing Bug Bite Balm.  It’s SO easy to make!

Bug Bite Balm

It’s basically three ingredients: Coconut Oil, Beeswax, and Essential oils. The Purification Blend is the only one of these oils not included in the starter kit we recommend.  And there are so many things you can do with it, that you’re going to LOVE having it in your essential oil arsenal!

  • 3 TBSP Organic Coconut Oil (not fractionated)
  • 2 TBSP Beeswax (about 1/2 an ounce)
  • 20 Drops Purification Blend Essential Oil
  • 20 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 20 Drops Melaleuca Essential Oil
  • 10 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil

Place Beeswax (grated or pastilles) in a double boiler.  To simplify cleanup, I use a saucepan, and a glass, oven safe Pyrex measuring cup.  I add hot water to the sauce pan (it just takes an inch or two), and put the beeswax in measuring cup, and bring it to a boil on medium heat.  After the beeswax starts to clump, I add the coconut oil, but you can add it all at the same time.  I stir frequently to help the wax melt, and keep an eye on the progress, because I don’t need it to do anything besides melt. Once it’s liquid, I’m golden.

After beeswax and coconut oil are melted, remove from heat, and transfer to a hot pad or trivet, being careful not to touch the glass, because it will burn you, badly. (If you do accidentally get a burn, apply Lavender oil to help!) Allow the wax mixture to cool to the point where you can comfortably touch the glass for 10 seconds.  Putting Essential Oils in a hot mixture will minimize the effectiveness of them, and we don’t want that!

Once the beeswax has cooled off enough, you have to work fast.  Add the 20 drops each of Purification Blend Essential Oil, Lavender, and Melaleuca, and the 10 drops of Frankincense, and stir.  For easy clean up use a pair of chopsticks to stir.

After you have added your Essential Oil, stir quickly.  If it’s starting to solidify, simply return the sauce pan to the heat, and on low heat, stir until liquid again.  Then quickly pour into your balm containers! Let solidify over night, and be careful not to leave the Bug Bite Balm where it can be exposed to extreme heat (like your car… but it’s probably safe from melting in your purse).

Extra Strength Anti Itch Stick

The Extra Strength Anti Itch Stick.  Can I tell you how amazing this thing is?  It helps with ANY itch, not just itchy bug bites.  The only difference in the Bug Bite Balm and the Extra Strength Anti Itch Stick?  You add three more Essential oils.  Add 10 drops each of Geranium and TerraShield, and 5 drops of Roman Chamomile when mixing up your Bug Bite Balm.  Then pour into containers.  It’s really that simple.

Bug Bite Roller Bottle/Extra Strength Anti Itch Roller Bottle

Now, I know you’re a busy person.  And, we understand that not everyone gets excited when we say “Let’s make some Bug Bite Balm today!” It does take a little time and effort (only about 15 minutes, but still, some days I don’t have 1 extra minute, let alone 15, and I know you understand that!).  If my kid gets bitten by a bug, I want something RIGHT NOW. Making a roller bottle is SO easy!  You can get roller bottles for less than $0.50 each, right here.  Get the 24 pack, you KNOW you are going to be sharing these awesome oils with your friends, and the easiest way to do that is in a roller bottle.

To make the Bug Bite Balm in a roller bottle, simply add 20 drops of Lavender, Purification Blend, and Melaleuca and 10 drops Frankincense to a 10ml Roller Bottle.  Then fill with Fractionated Coconut Oil. Firmly attach the roller piece and put on lid.  Shake well, and you’re ready to go.  It will take you less than a minute!

To make the extra strong itch relief roller bottle, add 20 drops of Purification blend, Lavender, Melaleuca, 10 drops of Frankincense, Geranium, and Outdoor Blend, and 5 drops Roman Chamomile, and fill with fractionated Coconut Oil.  Add the top, and the lid, and shake well.  Apply to aid relief for temporary itchiness as often as needed!

The Anti Itch sticks make quite a bit.  I used 6 Lip Balm Containers, 3 of the 3 ML Lip Balm pots, and 1 Half Oz Salve Container.  All told, it made almost 60 ml of balm, or just over 2 oz, so plan your containers wisely.  🙂
