Money Saving Tips: Save on Prescriptions

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

When you get a prescription from your doctor ask for generic:  Generics that are the exact same drug as a brand name  just less expensive. You are not getting a higher quality if you choose Vicodin over hydrocodone + acetaminophen. They are the exact same chemical compound. One just has a brand name on it and a higher price tag.

Look for generic when buying over the counter drugs too:

Tylenol = Acetaminophen

Bayer = Aspirin

Advil or Motrin = Ibuprofen

Aleve = Naproxen Sodium

Benadryl =  Diphenhydramine

Excedrin = Acetaminophen + Aspirin + Caffeine

Most often times you will see the generic of a drug right next to the brand name. If you ever wonder what the generic is for your favorite brand name drug  just read the label.  If you stack a coupon with a sale you can probably get the brand name for less, but if you do not have a coupon go for the generic brand!

    I am a certified pharmacy technician and unless you or your doctor specifically orders brand name, it will always be filled with the generic. It’s what is most cost effective for the pharmacy as well.

    I had a friend remind me that some pharmacies price match. She went to pick up a generic prescription from our Smiths pharmacy, and it was $80!! The pharmacist told her to call the local pharmacies. If she found a lower price, they would match it. She got the Wal-Mart price of $30. Woo hoo for saving $50 by making a few phone calls!
