How to Make the Best DIY Fall Air Freshener

Here’s an amazing trick to permeate your home with a festive fall smell, and the best thing about it is it’s completely SIMPLE and CHEAP. I made this entire DIY with things I already had in my cupboards.

I’m all about providing you with DIYs that are simple, useful, and affordable and this one just might be on the top of the list!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 mug
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract (imitation vanilla extract works fine too)
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2-4 cloves (It is better to use whole cloves, but I only had ground)

Step 1. Heat the oven to 300 degrees F.

Step 2. Add 2 teaspoons of Vanilla Extract to your mug.

I like to add this first just so that when I add the powders, it can be quickly absorbed by the liquids.

NOTE: I realize that the price of vanilla has skyrocketed over the last year or so you can totally do this with a nice imitation vanilla!

Step 3. Add 1/2 teaspoon of Nutmeg and Cinnamon to the mixture!

I like to give it a little stir after I add the nutmeg and cinnamon just so that the vanilla and the powders can mix nicely.

Step 4. Add 2-4 Cloves and Mix!

Adding whole cloves is ideal! But, as I said earlier I only had ground cloves on hand and it worked just fine. I just added a 1/2 teaspoon and my house still filled with the scent.

Adding whole cloves would be better, but just use what you have on hand. Once everything is added, be sure to stir it all up and mix it nicely.

Step 5. Place the mug in the oven

I left mine in the oven for about an hour. I was worried that the mixture could burn, but it didn’t! It just hardened!

You will begin to notice the smell filling your home about 20 minutes into the process. My husband actually came home and saw the oven on and said, “what are you baking?” and I had to break the news that it was just some spices in a mug! haha

This is such a simple and fun DIY! If you do not have all the above ingredients, it will work if you leave things out. The vanilla is essential, but you can mix and match the other spices!

Other Cheap Air Freshener Methods

  • Nannangel79 says she added some water to the mixture and microwaved it, then just left it on a table in the house!
  • Kristin said she made a stovetop air freshener with this mixture for the same effect!
  • Kelse says this DIY air freshener works great in a mini crockpot!
