Mondays With Mavis…

Would you believe I didn’t use 1 coupon last week?  Nope.  Instead I decided to stock up local produce deals and spend my time in the garden rather than clipping coupons.  Having a stockpile is FAB, especially when it’s a slow week at the stores.

Here is what I stocked up on:

A quick trip to Costco {no cart needed ;)} cost me $15.12  Have you tried their chicken soup base?  Oh my.  A few tablespoons, a pot of water and a little leftover chicken is all you need to whip up a quick pot of chicken soup.

Milk was only $1.99 a gallon at Safeway and QFC had fresh asparagus for only $.99 lb.  I bought 2 lbs and I think I’ll have to go back for more before the sale ends on Tuesday.

My local produce stand had red peppers and avocados on sale for $.50 each, broccoli and zucchini .99lb and English cucumbers for only $1 each.  Wowza!  I wish prices were that low every week.

So, how did you do at the stores last week?

Did you stock on on any FAB produce deals?

Total Spent This Week $26.64
Total Spent This Year $320.32
Total Spent This Year on Garden Seeds/Supplies $339.38

I think ya got ripped off on the milk–it’s half gone! 🙂

I love the Costco Chicken Soup Base! It makes excellent gravies as well as soups. Try the Beef Base too, it’s just as great. 🙂

    Mavis,

Will you EVER show pictures of your stockpile?? 🙂

Hey Mavis, I love your contributions! You’ve inspired me to do some gardening, but I have a question. Any tips on how to keep insects off your vegetables?

    • Mavis

      Hi Carrie,
I don’t have any tricks. The only thing I do is capture slugs and toss them into a salt bucket. I don’t know if I’m just lucky or what, but I have never really had a problem with bugs. I use a ton of compost {from the chickens & a local company called Tagro} and that is about it.

    Mavis,
Do you know of any good gardening blogs? I love local produce stands! I enjoy going to the farmer’s market and picking up a variety of produce.

Yay for mentioning the Simply in Season cookbook! This is my favorite cookbook of all time. Our family eats dinners out of it at least once a week. The recipes are simple, fresh and delicious. There are lots of meatless meal ideas which also helps cut down on the grocery budget. I think everyone should have this cookbook in their collection. 🙂
