Mondays With Mavis…

I celebrated my birthday last week and as a treat to myself I took the week off from couponing.  Yay!  I think we all need to put down the scissors every once in awhile, don’t you? 😉  Instead of scouring the ads I took the easy way out and went to Costco.

Want to know my secret for walking out of Costco for under $100?

Seriously, that’s how I do it.  Although I don’t shop at Costco often, when I do I typically buy bananas, so as soon as I walk in to the store I head back to the produce section, grab a banana box, get what I need and go straight to the register. No lollygagging for this FruGAL.

Thanks to my FAB stockpile this is all I needed to buy this week!

Here is what my transaction looked like:

2 Gallons of Milk $4.99{$2.49 each}
10lbs Yellow Onions $2.99 {$.29lb!}
10lbs Carrots {$.59 a lb!}
6lbs Pears {$.49 lb}
6lbs Bananas {$.46 lb!}
2 English Cucumbers {$1 each}
Final Price: $23.73

Did you use a bunch of coupons this week?

What was your favorite purchase?

Total Spent This Week $23.73
Total Spent This Year $230.39
Total Spent This Year on Garden Seeds/Supplies $143.52

Black & Decker Fruit and Vegetable Juice Extractor $29.92 Shipped!

    I am actually happy when there is a week or 2 here and there with nothing on sale that I need!
    It’s a good time to take stock and use what you already have.

    I went to Safeway and used 4-$1/1 SmartFood coupons with 4 – Doubles to get Kettle Corn bags for .38 (x 4 = $1.54) They have an in-ad coupon to get them for $1.88 (Limit 4)

    I found the coupons on a tearpad.

    Other than that, I got some fresh produce at Chuck’s.

    I’m curious when it comes to Costco….Are these good items to buy at costco vs. waiting for a coupon? Are there any items that are definetly a better deal there? Costco always is my downfall. I buy a good amount of my produce, meat, eggs, organic bread and organic milk there.

      Bananas are always a great deal but for everything else you just have to get lucky. It seems like the prices always vary.

    Great trip and a great birthday present to yourself. But my question is what do you plan to do with all the onions and carrots? I have a hard time not letting a 3 to 5 lb bag go bad.

    Happy Birthday!

      We start evey meal with diced onion and garlic so when i have a ton of carrots and or celery i add that to the mix. Its a great way to get a few extra veggies into a meal. Also you can use shredded carrots in a salad or in a meat loaf or diced carrots in a rice such as fried rice or even diced carrots in tomato sauce. You can virtually add them in anywhere because they kind of blend into the background of flavors. Simply chop length wise and steam as a perfect side dish!

      I’m not sure yet. 🙂 Maybe I’ll try and juice a few.

        I chop my onions and use my food saver to pack and seal small portions then freeze them. For my carrots I slice em and dehydrate them then put them in a jar for soups and such all winter!

    Were all the fruits and veggies u bought organic?

  • You must have massive biceps!!!

    We do the same thing at Costco and after packing a 20lb bag of potatoes around the store you don’t waste time “looking” 🙂
