Freezer Meal Recipes: Homemade Manwich Sloppy Joes

Copycat Manwich Sloppy Joe Recipe

You can often get canned Manwich Sloppy Joe sauce for cheap with sales and coupons. But you can make it at home for cheap too! Homemade is better for you, still easy and quick to make, and it freezes well too!

This is not a sweet sloppy joe sauce, but it is not really spicy either. It is full of tangy flavor! We all really like it in my family. Apparently, a lot of other people like it too. Hence, you can buy Manwich at nearly every grocery store and it has been around for a while.

You can ditch the can though, mix up your own tangy sloppy joe sauce with simple ingredients, and still have dinner on the table in less than 20 minutes. I love an easy dinner! This sloppy joe sauce only needs to simmer for 10 minutes before serving.

I usually use frozen chopped green peppers in this recipe since I don’t have fresh green peppers around regularly. Most of the other ingredients are easy to keep in the pantry, like the dried seasonings and tomato sauce. Even the buns can be kept on hand in the freezer for a little while without drying out too much.

To make this TERRAfit-friendly, use a low-sugar ketchup and serve with a whole grain bun or eat it without a bun!

Homemade Manwich Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

    Sauce:
  • 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup low sugar ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1 tablespoon green pepper, diced fine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • You will also need:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 6 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Combine all sauce ingredients in a medium bowl.
  2. Brown 1 pound ground beef, drain the fat. Add the sauce to the meat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with toasted hamburger buns.
  3. Preparing For the Freezer:
  4. Store the sloppy joe filling in a gallon-size resealable freezer bag, or portion into smaller bags according to your needs. Label and date the bags, remove as much air as possible, and freeze flat. The buns may also be frozen.
  5. Prepare after Freezing:
  6. Remove from freezer and thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Heat gradually in a saucepan until warmed through and serve.

Notes

Make this extra healthy by adding some cooked quinoa and skip the buns! Have it over cooked carrots or squash instead!
