If you’re staying close to home for spring break but still want to enjoy a mini vacation with the family we have some great tips for a staycation. These 5 ways to can help to make it jammed pack with fun, activities, and memories…all on a smaller vacation budget.

The Staycation

A couple of years ago with the financial crisis dragging virtually everyone along its barren path, even people who could afford vacations were choosing not to spend money on them.  Hence, the staycation: a planned period of time for having fun locally without extensive travel and lodging expenditures.

Maximizing Your Together Time

Daily Activities

Plan daily activities so you actually get out and have fun.  Visit local parks, museums, go for a bike ride, movie theaters, etc. Also look around for bead stores where you can make a piece of jewelry, pottery places where you can paint a piece with the kids, or even take class at an art studio!

Have FUN together! We recently made these Marshmallow shooters and had an epic family marshmallow contest and had so much fun! There are also several great ideas in these Crafts for Kids that you can do on a budget!

Want to stay in for your day? Unplug and make it a family fun day – get down on the floor and build with Lego, theme your lunch/dinner. You saved a bundle by staying at home so pick up a Lego set that’s been on the kids’ (or yours) wishlist for a while! A new Lego set will be a lasting souvenir from your staycation! Our kids also love perler beads so we have purchased a big tub and spent the day creating!

Eating Out

Let the kids choose their favorite restaurant for dinner one night.  For mine, that’s a special treat itself since we almost never eat out. You can use deal sites like Groupon or Living Social  to find discounted dining experiences.

Sometime eating out can even be hard on a budget…set up a Restaurant in your house. Have the kids make signs, banners, menus, and set the table with something fancy, or use paper plates! Chose from one of these FAB Copycat recipes, and it will be just like sitting in your fav restaurant!

Avoid Routine Errands

Plan meals and snacks and make sure you have everything you need beforehand to avoid a trip to the store, which reminds you to stop at the post office, which reminds you to stop at the bank, and suddenly your quick trip turns into a 2 hour errand. Still need to do some shopping, but don’t need it right away? Check out Amazon Prime Pantry and have groceries and household items shipped right to your door!

Make Rules to Keep it Different

While leaving your cell phone home might not be an option, there are things you can do to avoid falling into everyday routines.  If you can’t give up email altogether, make time limits for when you will check it and how long you will be online. If your kids want to spend time on their phone or tablets you can set a timer for all of you while you take care of your things.

Treat your staycation time as vacation time – if a friend wants to go out to lunch or needs a babysitter, tell them you’re on vacation with the fam!

Reduce Travel Costs

If you want to get away from your house, instead of buying plane tickets or spending a lot on gas, stay in a hotel downtown for a night or two.  You can still get away without extreme travel costs, and the hotel will have a pool and free breakfast!

Overall, having a focused time on your family is so special!
Plan for a special day or two and make sure to take your camera with you!
