Fab Family Fun: Portable Sandboxes

family fun

I saw this in Family Fun magazine a few days ago and thought it was brilliant, probably because I always wanted a sandbox and never had one.  I thought about buying my kids one of those plastic crab or turtle ones but they cost more than I wanted to pay.

Instead of buying a large, expensive sandbox, make each child their own portable one with a plastic storage container on wheels!

Fill the container with sand and let the kids play in it with toy shovels, rakes, etc.  At night, cover it with the lid to keep out bugs and rain.  Then in the winter, just wheel it into the garage.

I love it!

I’ve done a similar “sandbox” for my 4 yr old son and he LOVED it. He was obsessed with it all summer last year. He made construction sites, pirate ship treasure hunts, cooked us “lunch” many times and just had a ball with it.

    I highly recommend it!

Good Idea. We had a large sandbox for my kids and had to eventually get rid of it because of neighbor cats – It was DISCUSTING. But this is a great way to keep it covered and move it!

When my son was in infant daycare , they had a little sand table inside. They filled it with sacks of cornmeal. That way if they scooped and ate, it was good for them. Each week they used fresh cornmeal in this little table.

Bird seed is fun, too. It’s ok if they eat it and the birds clean up what they spill.

Thanks for the ideas, I wasn’t completely sure where to buy sand but now it doesn’t matter!

I have one of those totes in the house and I put lentils in it. (Lentils at Winco are like 38 cents a pound) Our local children’s museum has a lentil table and I got the idea from that. I put in some sand toys and my daughter ads to it all the times. It is a bit of a pain to clean them up if they fall out but it’s not that bad. It’s a great idea for sensory and fine motor skill development. And it keeps all the kids and even adults entertained rain or shine!
