Easy DIY Halloween Decorations (That Aren’t Super Scary)

Do you have your Halloween decor out yet? My whole family thinks Halloween decor is so much fun and it is also exciting because it is like the kick-off to the holiday season! Let the family celebrations, decorating, yummy food, and shopping begin! Right?

We like to try to add one new Halloween decoration item to our collection each year. It can be store-bought or homemade. Whatever works!

If I go the DIY route, I can usually manage to get more than just one new item if I really want to. 😉 And if you get the whole family involved in making them or picking out the stuff, they will become the most favorite and cherished decorations and crafts of all.

To help you make some of your amazing DIY Halloween decorations, I’ve gathered all our favorite kid-friendly Halloween crafts into this post to get you inspired!

1. DIY Halloween Frame and Free Halloween Printable

These inexpensive frames turned out so cute! Love the decorative paper and the printable. Plus, this is a great way to use up some old frames!

2. Spider Web Frame Decor

This is another really easy and cute DIY decoration! You can use nearly any frame you have around, or get one at a thrift store, and paint it whatever color you want.

3. Googly Eye Candle Holder

Make the candles in your home just a little bit more creepy by putting eyes on them! I love how fun this idea is, and it’s pretty inexpensive too. It just might take a while to get an entire candle holder covered in eyes.

4. DIY Spooky Halloween Banner

How cute is this banner on the mantle? Totally works hanging with a mirror or just on the wall over a table or couch. The font is free, then you just need paper, mod podge, glitter, glue gun, and yarn. Customize the colors and letters to whatever you prefer!

Lately, I have had a kid asking me every day how many days are left until Halloween! You can use this simple DIY countdown chalkboard for any upcoming event or holiday.

These pumpkins are great because you can keep them around through Halloween and into Thanksgiving! They’re super customizable too. You could probably use these as outdoor decorations too but I like to keep mine inside so they don’t get wrecked.

9. Toilet Paper Roll Bat

This is a super easy and fast decoration idea! Make glowing ghosts or eyeballs and put them inside near windows or hang them on trees outside. This is another one of those decorations that work great indoors or outdoors! And I guarantee you the kids will love this one!

Why buy expensive spider web decorations when you can just make your own out of a couple of trash bags? Add some dollar store spiders to these and you’ve got a creepy decoration for outside!

Here’s yet another Halloween craft that would look great outside or indoors! These fun wooden pumpkin decorations could be for your mantle, porch, or entry table. Snazz them up with black painted polka-dots, chevron, decorative paper, or leave them simple and cute.

For a subtle and kid-friendly decoration, this spider web doormat idea is perfect. It will go great with the other outdoor DIY Halloween decorations on this list too!

This is a very cute (and slightly spooky – look at that spider!) Halloween wreath for the front door or a mantle! Way cheaper to make yourself than buying a pre-made one!

Add a little bit of mystery and spookiness to your porch with these floating witch hats! These are quite easy to make as you can find the hats pre-made, and then you just have to customize them however you like! You could put these indoors as well if you like.

This is a fun one for the trick or treaters! Suckers disguised as ghosts! I love how creative and just downright genius this is. You could even draw faces on them with a Sharpie if you want to take it a step further.

  • That googly eye candle holder is kinda creepy and might trigger trypophobia. 😀

  • I like to cut decorations out of paper and use removable tape to attach them to walls and windows. My town is known for bats, so I’m going to cut out lots of bat silhouettes in different sizes and tape them on my front door to look like a swarm of bats is flying out. I am much better at painting pumpkins than I am at carving them, so I’m going to buy one of those lovely white pumpkins and paint a Dia de los Muertos skull face on it.
