DIY Natural Citrus Hand Sanitizer

make your own natural hand sanitizer with essential oils

I’m excited about this natural and more importantly, alcohol free hand sanitizer!  I’ve always been a little bothered by the ingredients that we put on our hands to get them “clean”.  This is something I can feel good about putting on my hands and the hands of my little ones as we’re out and about!

Materials:

  • 2 oz. glass spray bottle (If you have a 4 oz. bottle on hand, that’ll work too! Just double the recipe)
  • Room temp water
  • 1 1/2 tsp. natural aloe vera (alcohol free!)
  • 10 drops Protective Blend
  • 2 drops Invigorating Blend (can cause photosensitivity, so be careful using it prior to sun exposure!)
  • 5 drops Vitamin E oil
  • Funnel for adding items to your spray bottle

What is the Protective Blend?

Protective Blend provides a natural way to keep your family healthy. It helps protect against environmental and seasonal threats with essential oils known for their positive effects on the immune system. Specific brands are tested for internal use, have supplement facts, can be taken internally for immune support! They can also be used around the house as a disinfectant and non-toxic cleanser. When diffused into the air, it provides healthy respiratory function. Applied topically, it provides cleansing and purifying benefits while promoting circulation.

A note about working with essential oils…

blue bottle

As with most recipes containing essential oils, dark glass containers are highly recommended. (We love the pretty blue ones!) Glass will not absorb the oils or release harmful chemicals into your product. Essential oils are also known to disintegrate plastic and make it weak. If you are going to use a plastic container, a high grade quality plastic would be best.

Now that we have the nitty gritty out of the way, on with the tutorial!

how to make your own hand sanitizer

Start off by adding your aloe vera and oils to the glass spray bottle.  I used the end of the spray attachment to help the aloe down the funnel and into the bottle top.

Fill the rest of your bottle with room temp or slightly warm water. Be careful not to fill it to full because you want to leave room to attach your spray top. Attach your spray top, gently shake to mix and you’re done! Easy peasy! To use, just give your hands a quick spray or two and rub together. It dries quickly leaving your hands soft and smelling clean.

If you’re feeling fancy or plan to give your homemade sanitizer as a gift, you can create a label to go with it. I choose to keep it simple and just printed one out then glued it to the outside of the bottle. Printer label sheets, stickers and tie on tags are all great options!

What is it in this hand sanitizer that actually kills the germs?

    • The Protective Blend is what kills the germs. From the product information sheet, “Protective Blend protects against environmental and seasonal threats with essential oils known for their positive effects on the immune system. It can be taken internally on a daily basis to maintain healthy immune function as well as used on surfaces throughout the home as a non-toxic cleaner.”
