DIY Dryer Sheets!

Ladies and gents, this DIY is going to save you big bucks!  Luckily, you already know how to make your own fabric softener.  Unfortunately, I’m away from home and all my DIY goodies are there and I’m states away. So, I didn’t get to make my own softener. I know, I know, boo on me!  You, on the other hand, can use that information in combination with this DIY and you’ll be on your way to having one bottle of fabric softener last you anywhere from 6 months to a year!  Heck yeah!

Here’s what you’re going to need:

  • Bottle of liquid fabric softener
  • Old rag (shirt or towel)
  • Scissors
  • Bowl or Container
  • Hanger

Ok. The first thing you’re going to want to do is cut your rag into strips.  I’m using a towel just because I think it will hold on to the softener a bit better than any other material.

I cut my strips in half after I cut them out of the towel.  They would be too long if I didn’t.

Once you’re done cutting, add your strips to an empty container or bowl.

Now, pour your liquid fabric softener over the strips and allow your fabric to soak up most of the liquid.

Once your strips are saturated, pull them out and wring out any excess.  Then, place your strips on a hanger to let them dry.

I hung them from my shower rod and set a container up underneath them just in case any of the liquid seeped out.  Having the liquid drip into the tub could leave you with a slip and fall later!  So, be sure you rinse any area you find with drippings if you’re not using a “catch”.

Let the strips hang until they are completely dry.  Once they are, they are ready to use!  Simply toss a strip in with your next dryer load!

You can reuse these “dryer sheets” 4 or 5 times before it’s time to add liquid fabric softener again!  Can you believe that?  I love it!  Congrats, fugal lovers!  You’ve just learned how to make your fabric softener last forever!

  • I wouldn’t use the “towel” ones w/ your black clothes…

    • Donna, I used the towel sheet with my black towels (in the picture). I didn’t have any problem with it at all. It’s just fabric softener, not bleach. It shouldn’t do anything to your clothes regardless of the color.

  • I would be afraid that the towel would leave fuzzies all over black stuff. I think that was Donna’s point.

  • I hear that you don’t have to dry them, Just ring them out then pop them in to the dryer with you wet cloths. once the cloths or dry take the home made sheet out and put it back in to the fabric softener and repete the whole thing. Washing the sheets every so often.
