DIY: Homemade Valentine Ideas for Kids!

DIY Valentines for Kids

Make Your Own Valentines!

You can get store-bought Valentines for really cheap, especially with a coupon deal, but I thought it might be fun to do a homemade Valentine this year with my little guys, so I tried out a few ideas. A nice little weekend project!

heart crayon valentine

DIY Heart Crayon Valentine

Supplies:

I used the Freshware 12-Cavity Mini Heart Silicone Mold and Baking Pan with great results, plus it was on sale when I bought it! If you have a bunch of free floss sitting around, you could try using that instead of twine. 😉

What I did:

  1. Gather broken and old crayons.
  2. Remove the paper and break or cut crayons into small pieces.
  3. Melt crayons in heart molds. Let cool.
  4. Print out template on card stock.
  5. Attach the heart crayons to the card stock.

Gather all of your old and broken crayons. (We can usually get FREE or really cheap crayons during the fall Back to School Sales!) Remove the paper and break or cut them into small pieces. I had to use my fingernail or a knife to score the crayon wrappers on some of the older ones. Or you can try soaking the stubborn ones in water for about 5 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 250. Spray your silicone heart pan and place the crayon pieces into the molds. (If you want to add glitter, you can sprinkle some into the molds before you add the crayons.) Organize the crayons by like colors or throw in a whole rainbow of them! Brighter colors are fun. Place the pan in the oven for about 10-15 minutes. If you bake them too long, the color may be begin to separate from the wax. The crayons should be liquid, so be careful when you remove the pan from the oven. I actually placed my silicone pan on a baking sheet to ease the removal from the oven.

Let the crayons cool for about 20 minutes, until the crayons are solid again. Then remove the hearts from the molds and put them on a cooling rack to let them cool completely.

Possible Messages:

  • “Have a colorful Valentine’s Day!”
  • “You color my world.”

swedish fish valentine

DIY Swedish Fish Valentine

Supplies:

I found a pack of 20 cellophane treat bags at Walmart for $0.97. And I couldn’t find the larger Swedish Fish at Walmart, but I did find them at Target.

What I did:

  1. Print the template onto blue card stock and cut them out.
  2. Place the cut-out card stock into the cellophane bag.
  3. Add some fish candies.
  4. Then close the bag with a twist tie.
  5. Trim the top of the bag with scissors to the desired height.

You can use the printables I created (here or here) or create your own trapezoid with a wavy top and write your message on it.
