How to create easy Pine Cone Decorations
I have a rather large family so when I think about Christmas I litterally gasp for air. I am starting early this year with handmade Christmas gifts. This year my kids and I have already been busily collecting pine cones each and every time we go out for a walk. We have found all shapes and sizes which will work to make every gift unique.
We started off with all different colors of ribbon and small wooden balls that we purchased at A.C. Moore. I used paint on some of the pine cones that depended on what I was making. I made angels, snowman and Christmas trees out of these pine cones. For the snowmen we painted the pine cones white while the Christmas tree pine cones were painted green. After painting the pine cones I glued a wooden ball to each of the angel pine cones. I then painted little eyes on the wooden balls.
Next I used rafia (you could use ribbon) and tied a bow that would match the size of the pine cones I used. I then used hot glue to place the rafia just behind the wooden ball head on to make the wings. To finish the pine cone angels off I used a metalic string and glued to the back of the wings.  These can be used as ornaments or to hang from a gift tag if you make small ones. I ususally make a set of 6 for each person as a gift and everyone loves them.
You can also make snowman by painting your pine cones white and gluing to craft popsicle sticks (after painting)  to make the skis. We used chenille stems (Brown) for the arms and small pom poms glued to the end of toothpicks for the ski poles and earmuffs. i used scrap material (fleece) for the scarf and earband (for the ear muffs) and a orange chenille stem for the nose.  The eyes were painted with black paint but you could use small black beads.
Other items you can make with pine cones are Christmas trees by painting them green and decorating. For Thanksgiving you could decorate each pine cone with chenille stems to make a turkey.  There are many different things you can use pine cones for and keep your projects cheap.  Everyone loves a homemade gift especially if made by you. As always Happy Crafting!
