How to Make a Countdown Chalkboard

This is such a fun and quick craft! I made this chalkboard countdown sign a while ago and my kids LOVE it. I made another one for a friend and she loved it as well so I wanted to share how to make your own!

I’ve seen similar things to this being sold online for $10-$20 and I think that’s just way too much. I hate paying that much for something I can make at home for a fraction of the cost.

Countdown Chalkboard Supplies:

I had a bunch of scrap wood on hand for this craft. If you don’t have any scrap wood, you can go to Home Depot or Lowes and they will cut the wood for you for FREE. {You do have to pick out and buy the wood though}

Step 1. Paint the edges of the board

First I painted the edges of my board with plain black spray paint. I used the lid of my paint can to elevate it on my box. I did about 3 coats on the edges:

Step 2. Apply the chalkboard spray paint

After the edges have dried pull out your chalkboard spray paint. I applied 3 coats of and it turned out well!

Note: Make sure you read the directions for you can. I had to shake mine for 2 minutes before using it.

Step 3. (Optional) Sand

After it dried (I let mine dry for about 2 hours) I used a sanding block to distress the edges a little bit. You can skip this step if you want a cleaner look.

Step 4. Apply the vinyl

Next, apply the {Days Until} vinyl. I used my silhouette to cut the vinyl out. I used the CAFÉ ROJO font, you can download it here for free. It is one of my favorite fonts.

If you don’t have a cutter you can use a white paint pen to write it out.

Step 5. Hang it up

I used my favorite Command Picture hangers to hang it up. I put it low so my kids could help with the countdown.

Make sure you follow the directions on your chalkboard paint to season your chalkboard before using it. Mine recommends letting it cure for 24 hours before using it.

Final Thoughts

I love that I can leave my chalkboard countdown sign up year round and have a countdown to whatever I want. I have young kids that can’t read so they like to see the pictures for what we are counting down to.
