Back to School Shopping Trip August 17 – 23, 2014

Back to School Deals 8-17 to 8-23, 2014

Shopping for Back to School Deals is almost done!  Have you shopped yet?  If not, you probably want to get it done this week, because a lot of places are already going back to normal prices (or raising their sale prices, so they aren’t as low).  This week is probably the last week you can find really good deals.  Maybe a few next week (and we’ll be sure to share where they are!), but they are going away, quickly.

Also, I’ve had several people ask me where to find the best deal on 2 inch binders.  Now, my frugal side SCREAMS at this.  2 inch binders are TWELVE times as expensive as 1 inch binders.  Sometimes more.  So, to me, if I see a 2 inch binder on my list, I’m getting my kid (2) 1 inch binders, and they can just deal with it.  But if you really want your kiddo to have the 2 inch binder, Walgreens is the best place this week ($6.29 for 2) followed closely by Staples ($10 for 2).  Both prices significantly beat the other ones I’ve seen, ranging from $8.99 to $18.99. (These aren’t the zipper binders folks, just regular old binders!)

Walgreens 8-17 to 8-23, 2014

I admit it.  I was a little irritated at Walgreens this week.  They have a TON of Paper Mate products for $0.49.  BUT the coupon is for $0.50/1, and they WILL NOT lower the value of the coupon, or raise the price of the item!!  It seems VERY silly to me, and I ended up putting a lot of items back, because they wouldn’t let me use the coupon.   This doesn’t happen very often though.  Just something to be aware of while shopping!  Price matching at Target or Walmart would be good options on this.  (I checked, Staples doesn’t carry the same items)

Buy (2) Wexford Binders, 2 inch, (Reg. $6.29) B1G1 Free

The prices of binders make me want to scream as well! My kids, who are entering junior high this year, each needed a 3″ and a 2″. I used a 30% off Staples Better Binders coupon to get their 3″ ones. These aren’t the cheapest binders around, but they need to put a TON of stuff into them and I’d rather get a good, high quality one now and not have to buy another mid year when a cheap one is falling apart. As far as the 2 inch binders go, I checked them out at Costco. They have a four pack that makes the binders about $3 each. I only needed 2, but my daughter’s bff needed one too, so I went in with her parent.

    • That’s a really good idea! I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to check Costco 🙂 That’s a GREAT idea. They have some really great deals on “fancy” pens all the teens want (okay, so MAYBE I want them too 🙂 )

  • Michelle

I just remembered that I photographed the binders at Costco so I could remember the price. 10.99 for four 2″ binders

  • Susan

The bigger binders are expensive, but I’d encourage you to get the size indicated by your child’s school and not substitute different sizes just because they’re cheaper.

Keep in mind that kids can be really hard on binders. In my experience, it’s worth it to invest in a good quality binder so you’re less likely to have to replace later on during the year.

We really like the Staples binders. They are very durable, and they come with a lifetime guarantee. If they break at any time in the future, Staples will replace them free of charge.

  • Susan

Another thing about binders … it depends on the age and maturity of the kid, but the zippered kind can be very good for kids who aren’t careful with their papers. It’s really easy to lose papers using unzippered binders.

Becky, another comment on the 1″ binders … keep in mind that starting in middle school / jr high, kids need a zipper pouch of some sort for pencils, erasers, and such. which will easily take up enough thickness that they won’t be able to fit all their papers in.

    • I remember in High School I wanted one different colored binder for each class, and I had my book covers match 😀
Then I just kept all the pencils, pens, etc in a pocket in my backpack…

But you do have a point about the pencil pouches… if that’s the why you go, you’ll need a bigger one 😀

      • Susan

It varies by school of course, but nowadays many schools don’t allow backpacks in class. At my daughters school, they are not allowed to return to their lockers between classes. So they need to carry all their supplies with them. It’s a lot easier if they have just one thing to carry.

Also, in our school district, kids are not issued books, so no need for book covers. They have only enough books for one class, and the books remain in the classroom for each class to use.

        • Oh my goodness… that’s so sad 🙁

          • Susan

Why do you think this is sad?

Your original post said “if I see a 2 inch binder on my list, I’m getting my kid (2) 1 inch binders, and they can just deal with it.” My point was that it is a lot more practical to use one larger binder instead of multiple small ones.

I was volunteering in my daughter’s school once when a child in her class tripped over another child’s backpack and broke a tooth! That alone makes me glad that backpacks aren’t allowed in classrooms at my daughter’s school. There is no place for them except for underneath chairs, where they’re bound to cause someone to trip. But more importantly, though, is the issue of weapons getting into the classroom, which is one of the primary reasons many schools don’t allow backpacks in classrooms. Yes, it does make me sad (and frightened) that violence occurs in schools often enough to make these steps necessary. But I’d be even more alarmed if the schools did nothing to at least attempt to keep classrooms safe.

As for textbooks, I’m glad my daughter doesn’t have to haul them around. They’re big and heavy, and expensive to replace if they were to get lost, stolen, or damaged. She brings home just papers or study guides, which is a lot more practical. And in many cases, materials are available online. Much easier to access materials that way for homework than lugging around heavy textbooks.

            • Oh, I meant the state of the world, where kids can’t bring backpacks into classrooms, and there isn’t enough money for the kids to get their own copies of their books. Just my personal opinion compared to when I was in school. Worrying about KIDS bringing weapons to school, not allowing them to go to their lockers, it’s just sad that the world has come to that. I’m wishing we lived in a safer place for our kids. But I understand the precautions. And I know the teachers/staff are doing all they can to keep the kids safe! 🙂

Hi. Another idea for binders that my kids love! Go to DI and buy an older not as nice looking, but heavy duty binder for about $1.00 or less. Buy some cute duct tape and recover it.

I just used older binders that we had and my kids didn’t even want me to buy new ones, they would rather I spend a couple bucks on duct tape to make them unique!

3 Rolls of Duct tape $9 at Wal-Mart and my 4 children have been happy for 3 years! Same old binders every year.. just new tape!
