5 Must Haves When Camping with Young Kids

Even when my kids were young, we did a lot of camping. It was fun! I have learned from experience that there are a few things that make a big difference when camping with young children though. Things you may not think about unless you have actually camped with young kids before. So, I am here to help you learn from my mistakes so you can KNOW without a doubt, the essential things you need to bring when you go camping.

Top 5 things to pack when camping with younger kids:

1. Screen Tent

Bugs can cause a lot of stress! Some children are allergic to different bug bites while others are just terrified of bugs in general! These tents are SO worth it because you will have a bug free place where the kids can hang out. Take a screen tent for around the table and let the kids eat in peace.

2. Portable Potty

This was a HUGE help for us as we potty trained our kids. We took the potty seat and set it next to the tent so we could avoid the walk to the bathroom. Also very helpful if you’re in a spot that doesn’t have a flushing toilet!

3. First Aid Kit

Kids are kids…and kids will need band-aids! Sometimes, they will also need a lot more than band-aids! Make sure to have an adequate first aid kit to help in all situations.

4. Wet Wipes

These come in handy for cleaning dirty hands for dinner or dirty faces for bed. Camping can be a little messy so these are AWESOME to have around. It is much easier than trying to bring wash clothes/rags to help you keep everything clean. You can just use these and throw them away! I would highly suggest bringing a good amount of these on ANY camping trip!

5. Walkie Talkies

I have these and LOVE them! Clear reception and great range! When the older kids want to go on a little walk or the girls and the boys decide to split up, these are a necessity because it is highly likely you won’t have the best cell service out in the woods. I would recommend these any day!

More things we love to have while camping with kids:

  • Bikes: Bikes and camping go hand-in-hand. If you can fit them in, it’s a fun way to get around or go exploring! Scooters could be a more compact option too.
  • Kids Size Chairs: Kids love to have a camping chair that they can easily climb in and out of.

Those are just a FEW of the top things I bring with me every time we go camping. Camping can be a little stressful, especially with little kids! It is crazy to get everything all together but once you are out there, it is the most relaxing thing. Now that summer is here, set aside some weekends where you can go out with your kids and just enjoy nature! They will LOVE it and those weekends will be memories they hold on forever!
