chicken breast deals

**UPDATE 4/4** SOLD OUT!

Zaycon just opened up a small Chicken Breast event on April 9th in Boise, ID.

So if you missed ordering last time, now is your chance! Orders must be placed by Monday, April 8 at midnight PST

The chicken is only $1.79 a lb!  That’s a PINK STAR deal!

Why I love Zaycon Chicken:

  • It’s 100 % natural chicken with no added hormones, additives or artificial ingredients!
  • Zaycon Chicken comes directly from the processor and has never been frozen.
  • It’s sold by the case — 40 lbs in each case, so you don’t have to worry about falling in love (which you will!) and then running out!

Remember, they hold these national Chicken Breast Events only twice a year, so be sure to stock up!

How it Works:

  • Zaycon Foods brings farm fresh food directly to you!  By skipping the grocery store, they can charge less, and you save MORE!
  • By registering for emails with Zaycon Foods, they’ll send you an email before events open!  That way you get first dibs, and can cash in on the savings before the events sell out!  And they do sell out QUICKLY!
  • After purchasing a case from them you’ll get a reminder email a day or two before you’re scheduled pickup.  It’ll remind you of where and when to pick up!
  • You show up on your pick up date, and drive in line.  Then when you get to the front, you show your receipt, and pop your trunk open, they load it and off you drive!  You never even have to leave your car!
  • We’ve been buying from and advertising for Zaycon Foods for the past 2+ years.  We have always been impressed with their products and their delivery process!

[NOTE:  Our chicken is delivered in its original wholesale packaging, a water resistant cardboard case containing three or four plastic bags of fresh chicken breasts. The smaller bags are typically sealed in a larger plastic bag. The smaller bags are not uniform in weight. There will be small amounts of naturally occuring liquids (i.e.,"chicken juice") in each bag and case. Chicken breasts typically come in double-lobed pairs ("butterfly") and will have small attached amounts of fat.]

Buying Meat for Less { Extreme Couponing Education }

Because they don’t tell you everything on reality television we are here to reveal the secrets of Extreme Couponing. TLC’s Extreme Couponing is really not about education it is more about entertainment. Our goal is to educate you and empower you to save money for your family.

We have been talking about how one of the myths of couponing is that coupons are only for processed foods, junk food or food my family does not eat. I also told you we were featured in the New York Times Magazine and many of the people writing in the comments accused us of only eating junk foods. All of this brought me to the conclusion that some people just need to be educated in the way we save money on food and still eat healthy. This week I am going to talk about how we buy our meat for less.

Buying Meat for Less

There are 4 key ingredients to saving money on meat. First you have to know your price points, second you have to find a sale, third you must stock-up and fourth you must preserve your meat.

Price Points

You have to know your price points if you are going to save money on meat. Refuse to pay more than a certain set good price. For example I will not pay more than $1.99 for boneless skinless chicken breast, and I do not stock up on it until it is $1.88 or less.

Find a Sale

I know that my grocery store will have a sale on chicken at least once every 6 weeks. So I wait for that sale. I also buy from Zaycon because they generally can bring chicken in for a lower price than my grocery store. The other nice thing about Zaycon is there meat is fabulous. Zaycon chicken is never frozen and comes fresh from the farm. HOT READER TIP: Find out when you local store marks down their meat, then buy it when it is marked down.

Stock-up

At my grocery store I will buy enough chicken to last until the next sale so that I do not ever have to pay full price again. Sale cycles on meat run at least every 6 weeks. (Learn more about Sale Cycles).  When Zaycon comes to town I buy at least a 40 lb box, sometimes I buy 3 boxes and split them in half with a friend so I will have 60 lbs of chicken. I have found that 60 lbs of chicken can last my family of four 6 months.

Preserving Meat

Freeze Your Meat - If you buy enough meat to last 6 weeks or 6 months it will certainly spoil in your fridge. So we recommend freezing it. Freezing meat will keep it fresh for a long time. Check out the recommendation for Safe Freezing Time.

Preparing for Freezing – When I buy meat from my grocery store meat counter I typically have the butcher package my meat in dinner portions. For my family of four I typically cook with about 1 lb of meat. So I ask for 1 lb packages of meat. When I buy from Zaycon I package my meat myself. Check out my video that shows you how to prepare meat for freezing.

Tools for Freezing Meat – When I freeze meat I use ziploc freezer bags or my Foodsaver. The more air you can get out when freezing your meat the more you are protected from freezer burn. I love my Foodsaver because it gets all of the air out, and my meat stays fresher longer.

Canning Meat – Canning meat is also an option. I have never tried it myself, but I have heard that this is a fantastic book here if you want to learn to can meat. The nice thing about canning is that you do not have to worry about losing your meat if the power goes out and the freezer thaws.

Dehydrating Meat – I love my  food dehydrator. Dehydrating meat is a great way to make jerky. Check out our video tutorial on how to make homemade jerky.

 Bonus Coupon Tip

When couponing if you are earning catalinas it is a great idea to use your catalinas to help you buy meat. Be sure you are still getting a good price though.

What the Yoder’s Ate For Dinner

I’m not very good about posting recipes we make each week. Because I feel like what we eat is pretty boring.  Dinner time has never been my forte, but I wanted people to see that my family doesn’t just eat processed foods.  Here’s what we had for dinner tonight:

We enjoyed wood plank smoked Salmon from Zaycon Foods (I told you how last Father’s Day gift was the best ever, didn’t I?), as well as smoked chicken (again, thank you Zaycon Foods  - which now delivers nation wide) with Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce we snagged last night at Fred Meyer for $1.  We also enjoyed some corn from Costco and I made some homemade mashed potatoes.   Thanks to my Super Hubs for workin the grill like magic!

Zaycon Bacon coming to ID, OR, and WA

A fruGAL or guy knows that you will not always be able to find coupons for meat and produce. FruGALs also know to watch for a fab price and stock up and freeze or preserve when the price is low!

Zaycon is bringing the bacon back!

Every time Zaycon has a sale our readers email us to find out if it is a good price. You know we love the Zaycon chicken sales!

The price for Bacon is…

30 lb case (4 pouches – 7.5lbs each ). Price is $2.97 per lb.

So is this a good price for bacon? Yes, for the cut and quality it is (it really is yummy). Is it rock bottom? No. What is your price point for bacon?

Here’s How to Take Advantage of this Price:

  • Register on the Zaycon site if you haven’t already.
  • On September 9th at 5:00, place your order for bacon.
  • Don’t wait because once they are gone they are gone.
  • Make sure you will be in town to pick up the order on your cities delivery date.
  • If you can’t pick up your order, consider finding a friend to pick your order up for you.

Mondays With Mavis…

How was your weekend?  Did you do anything exciting?  Like… Oh I don’t know, put on a superhero costume and roll around in the mud?  :)

I finally went to Boise!  Yay!  I though for sure I would come home with a sack or two of potatoes.  No.Such.Luck.  Monica and Cathy informed me there were no potato fields in Boise they could drive me to so I could have a photo op with a giant spud.  None!  I couldn’t believe it.  :(

Even with all the FruGAL adventures I endured over the weekend (which included staying up until 5:30 am chatting with Monica)… I did manage to buy a few groceries.  But I’m going to warn you right now, I went WAY over budget this past week. WAY.OVER.BUDGET.

Here is what I purchased:

FREE honey (thanks to Swagbucks)$1.00 for orange juice (I used a $2 off Tropicana coupon) $4.95 for 4 1/2 gallons of milk at Fred Meyer (I always try and use recycled bags at the store.  Did you know Fred Meyer will credit you $.05 per bag?)

FREE.  Garden fresh goodness.  The tomatoes are finally starting to ripen at a rate faster than we can gobble them up.  I have a few ideas on how to preserve them so be on the lookout for a special tomato themed post later this week. :)

We were able to pick a few quarts of FREE blackberries yesterday.  Next on the to-do list is to bake a blackberry pie and then we will start freezing all the blackberries we can possibly pick.

Zaycon peaches $37.92.  My husband sliced, peeled, and bagged the peaches up and put them in the freezer.  We LOVE smoothies, and since inexpensive fruit is hard to come by in the winter… These peaches will come in handy.

I spent $6 for 12 green peppers at QFC.  I sliced the peppers up and tossed them into the freezer.  I plan on using them over the next few months in fajatias and stir fry dishes.

Ridiculously large zucchini, cucumbers, purple beans, and tomatoes.  FREE

FREE groceries from Albertsons. I’m sure you already know how to score free Ken’s salad dressing, Chex mix, Bugles, yogurt, toothpaste and razors already so I won’t bore you with the details.  I was able to pick up a 5 Life Waters and a 1 Sobe because I doubled tear pad coupons (I found those a while back) and the Scotties tissue was free with the $1/1 coupon we told you about HERE {NLA}.

I paid $1.50 for 3 boxes of WhoNu cookies (I used 3 $1/1 coupons from the 8/28 SS+doublers), $.99 for Ocean Spray (I used a $1/1 coupon NLA + a double), $3.18 for 2 Minute Maid juice boxes (used the $1/1 coupon HERE+ doublers) and $.59 for Darigold sour cream (I doubled a $1/1 catalina coupon).  I also paid $1.00 for 2 Duncan Hines Glazes (I used 2 $1/1 coupons NLA + doublers) and $.29 for 1 Smuckers Hot Fudge Topping (I doubled a $1/1 catalina coupon).  6 Boxes of Keebler granola bars came to $3.78 after doublers and 6 $.75/1 coupons.  I paid $.99 for 1 box of Wheat Thins Sticks (I used a $1/1 coupon + a double) and scored a FREE box of Ritz Crackerfuls thanks to a peelie I found on the box. The Gatorade was $6.00 after I doubled the $1/1 hang tags I found on the product.  :)

Total Spent This Week: $67.90

Total Spent Year To Date: $1,011.33

There are 123 days left in 2011.  I have exactly $188.67 + a $100 Albertsons Gift Card left to spend if I plan on reaching my goal of only spending $1,200 oop for all our food, toiletries and dinners out in 2011.  That breaks down to about $2.34 a day.  Yikes!
