Money Saving Tips: Back to School Shopping?

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

It’s that time again…back to class…And that means back to the store for shoes, clothes, and school supplies.

Right now is a good time to start thinking about what you or your children need for the year and begin looking for the sales, comparing prices, and making a plan.

Here are 5 Money Saving Tips to consider  in this inevitable money spending time of year:

  1. Always buy on sale.  Just make it a rule for yourself and/or your children to only buy items that are on sale [and that of course have the lowest price because sometimes "on sale" doesn't mean inexpensive]. We are here to help you find the best back to school deals.
  2. Check the dollar store.  Don’t forget that the dollar store often has everything you need, so if it costs more than $1 somewhere else, you can always get it cheaper.
  3. Upcycle old supplies.  Take all of your supplies from the year before and make them look as new as possible.  Sharpen pencils, tear out used pages from old notebooks, and put a creative wrapping over the covers.
  4. Rely on hand-me-downs.  If you have older kids, consider passing down their clothes or supplies to the younger school-goers.
  5. Allow your kids to contribute.  If your children want articles that cost more than you’re willing to spend, allow them to work to make up the difference in price.

Money Saving Tips: Don’t Go for Lunch. Go for a Picnic

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

It seems like every time you want to catch up with friends, spending money is inevitably involved.  Whether you go out to lunch or dinner, you can end up spending more on a restaurant tab than what you spent on your last trip to the grocery store.

Instead of spending money on restaurants, why not pack a meal and go for a picnic?  It’s a perfect way to catch up with friends and enjoy a good meal, while still keeping your pocketbook full.

What do you do to avoid spending too much money with friends?

Money Saving Tips: Are You Wasting Money on Gas?

Be sensible in your efforts to save money.  Remember it’s not cost effective to spend $5.00 in gas driving around to several stores to save $1.

There was a time when gas was so cheap that you could afford to drive around to get the best price, but those days are over.  Gas is expensive, so consider it into the cost of an item when you have to drive far to get it.

We moved about 2 weeks ago.  About 2 days into our new house the electricity stopped working in the kitchen.  I could only run one appliance… fridge, microwave, stove, washer/dryer, crock pot, can opener, etc at a time.  That appliance had to be less than 600 watts… Everything was out :( .  What we have been able to make was sandwiches, bagels, cold cereal, stuff like that.  So, we have been eating out.  A lot.  Way more that we have in the last 12 months combined! My sweet husband decided to throw the food budget out the window for the past two weeks and call it “moving expenses”.  He didn’t allow me to keep receipts or track what we were spending.  We had to eat, and we couldn’t do that at our new home.  So, I know how much I paid for the shopping trips I blogged about.  That’s it.  We’re back in frugal/stockpiling mode, and BOY is it nice to be able to finally blow dry my hair or cook a meal on the stove without worrying about the fuses (yep, not circuit breakers) blowing!

Amber: Feeding Family of 4

Monthly grocery budget: $250

Spending this week: $0
Savings this week: $0

Spending For June: $0
Savings For June: $0

Year to date spending: $1587.64
Year to date savings: $1215.70

We had plenty of BBQ leftovers & a full fridge to get us through this whole week without shopping! I am heading doublers shopping tonight & I now have a VERY empty fridge, so next week’s budget might be a tad bit blown!

Money Saving Tips: Avoid Late Fees

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

Whenever you rent something, avoid paying a late fee by setting an alarm on your phone or marking your calendar to remember to take it back on time.

Late fees add up quickly and they are simply a waste of money.

So whether it’s a movie, a library book, or anything else, take it back on time.

Some libraries and stores even send out emails for that extra reminder about the due date.

As an extra reminder, try putting your rental in a place where you’ll see it when you leave the house.  That’s what I do for my Red Box movies and it works pretty well.  Remember rentals like Red Box are only worth it if you remember to take them back on time.

Money Saving Tips: After Holiday Shopping

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

The first few days after a holiday are great days to find some useful items!  I never pay full price for things like cup cake holders.  I always buy the festive ones on sale and use them even if they’re off season.  This season is also a good time to buy other baking goods like sprinkles, frosting, and cake mixes.

After all, it’s all about the taste, right?

Happy deal hunting!

Money Saving Tips: Cloth Napkins

Are you looking for some simple ideas to save money? We have simple solutions that you can easily apply to your lifestyle to save money!

You can save loads of money if you just don’t buy napkins and paper towels…instead use CLOTH NAPKINS!

If you use napkins on a daily basis, you could be spending an extra $5-9 dollars a month, depending on how many people live in your home.

I got a 4-pack of these beige napkins after Christmas and they cost me only about $2. So for even more savings, after the Valentine’s Day products go on sale at the store, look to see if you can find red or Valentine’s themed cloth napkins.  As long as you don’t mind that the napkins have a holiday specific theme, you will save even more getting them on sale.

FABULESSLY FRUGAL FRIDAY: Saving Money on Your Car/Gas

While many of these are not feasible in my life, so many of them are! And with gas prices on the rise, we can all use a few tips to save money at the pump!

  • Run errands once a week and use the most efficient route.
  • Walk as much as you can.
  • Stay home as often as possible.
  • Keep tires filled to their proper pressure.
  • Don’t suddenly stop or accelerate.
  • Carpool.
  • Bum a ride with friends and chip in for gas.
  • Ride your bike.
  • Coast when you see a red light ahead, instead of hitting the brakes.
  • Use public transportation.
  • Try to get by with one car if you have two.
  • If you have one car that you only drive a couple of times a week, consider getting rid of it and using cabs.
  • Drive your car until it’s old. This works really well when you buy a car that will run for 200,000 miles.
  • Keep up on your car’s maintenance.
  • Turn your car off at lights.
  • Coast when you can.
  • Limit city driving.
  • On a long trip, keep a steady foot.
  • Make it a challenge to see how far you can go on a tank of gas.
  • Use a discount card to buy gas. (Many grocery stores offer them, as well as Costco).
  • Fill up early in the morning when the air is cool, and the gas is dense. You’ll get more gas and less air.
  • Fill up when your tank is half empty.
  • Shop around for insurance. The rates can vary a lot!
  • Use gasbuddy.com to find the lowest price on gas.

Thanks Being Frugal!
