DIY Magnet Board For Your Kids!

Here’s a fun little pinterest inspired “Did it myself!” magnet board I made for my kiddos last Christmas! I was looking for an educational/busy activity for a gift rather than spending loads of $$ on toys with a life span of 3 weeks. This was perfect! Easy, affordable, AND educational. I enjoyed putting it together and actually wrapped it on the wall and everything! To make it, I bought an oil drip pan from the Walmart automotive section for about $10 and wiped it down really good with some 409 and let it dry. I’ve heard you can also purchase them at auto part stores for around the same price. I already had a set of alphabet flash cards so I didn’t need to purchase those but the ones below are similar. I ordered the wooden letters (which work MUCH better than the plastic ones because the entire back of them is magnet, so they stick better) on Amazon and then purchased some rubber cement from my favorite store in the whole wide world, Walmart. I then lined up the flash cards where I wanted them, glued them on and let them dry! Easy peasy. Lastly, the hubs used his power tools and anchored it to the wall with some heavy duty screws so it doesn’t move.  My kids love it and play with it all the time. It’s been on the wall since Christmas and still going strong! Speaking of Christmas, only 118 days to go! :)

Oil drip pan from Walmart… $10.00

Alphabet Pocket Flash Cards… $2.99

Melissa & Doug Magnetic Wooden Alphabet… $9.11

Hours of noise fun and mess entertainment for your little ones… PRICELESS! :)

Seriously though, this oil drip pan idea is AWESOME! If you wanted to make it super simple, you could totally skip the flash cards and just make it a fun magnet board! Here are a few more super cute magnets you could try out!

Couponing in a Small Space

Many of my friends have been asking me the same question over and over.  Where do I put it?  My husband, our one year old, our 35 lb Lab/Mini Schnauzer and I live in a 1,000 foot, 2 bed, 1 bath apartment, so sometimes we have to get a little creative on where we put things!  But, it totally keeps me from being a hoarder, and organization is KEY!

Personal Care Stockpile

First, My “Linen” Closet.  As you can see… not many linens :)   But, our daughter’s crib sheets are kept in her room, and we limit ourselves to 2 sets of sheets… 1 on the bed, one off, and then hand towels, and kitchen linens.  The rest is where we store our personal item stockpile.

Some close ups:

All of my “cleaning” stockpile is on the top shelf, along with the actual basket of cleaning supplies, and a few full size samples of sinus products I’ve received.  On the 2nd shelf is my entire personal care stockpile.  If it won’t fit, I can’t buy it.  Just a quick note on the Precise and Thermacare patches (so as not to cause a riot) I have been in over 10 serious car accidents in my life (most of them not my fault) so I deal with CONSTANT back pain.  I know it looks like a lot, but they really are one of the few things that help, and if I were to snap another picture in a couple of months, they will all be gone (so hopefully the sale cycles quickly!).

The third and fourth shelves include everything someone would normally see in a medicine cabinet.  However, being a couponer, I don’t just have one of an item, (usually) so it’s sorted into these bins, to make it easy to find, and to keep our one bathroom neat and tidy.  The wicker basket in the back is where I toss my samples (check out my Freebie Friday post here to find out where I’m getting my samples!).  If say the Tooth”Care” bin is full (where I keep our toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss), I  simply don’t buy anymore, even if it’s on sale for “FREE”.  It also makes it super easy to tell when I’m getting low on something!  Plus I got the bins during a B1G1 sale, for $.50 each (those sales usually happen in January, if you are interested)!! The  floor holds my paper towels (oh please, oh please, oh please, let there be another “Round Up” sale soon at Albertsons!) and excess laundry items.  Our washer and dryer are in our bathroom, so our towels, laundry soap, and open dryer sheets hang out there.

Food Stockpile

When moving from our house into a smaller apartment, I knew I couldn’t have a  6 month or a year stockpile.  However, I do still have a 3-4 month stockpile.  I keep it all in my pantry, and my husband is cool with me using 1/2 of our kitchen table for the bigger, bulky items.

(So, sometimes, when I special order a case of something, my husband thinks it’s funny to put the display together.) We usually just keep our extra cereal, and bottled water/soda on the table.

We have a 2 door pantry in our apartment.  The top part contains 4 shelves.  The top shelf is where we keep our open cereal, crackers, and baby food.  The 2nd shelf is for our snackie (snacky?) items, the 3rd shelf gets all our pasta, potatoes, and other “boxed” products.  The bottom shelf keeps all of our canned goods, pasta sauces, items like that.

The bottom portion of the pantry is the same size at the top, but we keep our pots, pans, and mixing bowls in the bottom half.  The top shelf gets all of our “condiment” type foods, bbq sauce, salad dressing, mayo, salsa, spice packets, stuff like then.  Then the last shelf gets our baking items, pancake mixes, brownie/cake mixes, frosting and extra spices.

Now, with only buying fresh produce, milk, eggs, and other perishables my family could live off what you see for at least 3-4 months.   And almost all of the items you see?  Cheap or free with coupon :) .

While the system isn’t perfect, it’s what works for us!!

But I want to know: How do you store your “goods”?  What secret organizational skills have kept your stockpile from taking over every inch of your house?  Email me pictures at BeckyFabFruGal at hotmail dot com!!  I wanna see!!  (let me know if it’s okay to post them, to give others ideas on how to organize their stockpile too!!)

Edit:

One of the Facebook Followers asked if I could name the bins, so here they are!!

In no Particular order (well, okay, we put the ones we use most on the top, and the ones we use least on the bottom)

  • Medical Rubs (icy hot and the like)/Lip Balms

Don’t Forget to Place an Order!

Albertsons  is smokin this week (espcially for those of us who get to Round Up our Coupons!)… even if you don’t get to round up, there are still some great deals!

We’ll be getting Bounty paper towels for $.25, and A&W Rootbeer/7-UP for $.25.  What about the $.10 Brownie Minis or $.10 boxes of Swiss Miss… you get the picture, it’s a GREAT stock up week!  In fact, my neighbors will be getting cute boxes of Brownie mixes and Hot Chocolate for Christmas this year!

So Monica is at the store placing an order for the two of us.  Why do we place an order? Because we are getting large quantities, and we don’t want to clear the shelves!

I thought this would be an appropriate time to remind everyone HOW to place an order!

  1. Figure out how much you want:  What will you use the product for?  How long do you want this to last?  (3 months, 6 months, a year?)
  2. Pick the varieties:  You may need to go to the store to see what is available.  You’ll want to have this ready when you place your order.
  3. Go to, or call Customer Service and ask for the grocery manager.  If they aren’t willing to place an order for you, call a different store!  I know for certain that Damien at Five Mile and Overland Albertsons in Boise  would LOVE to take an order from you!
  4. Order early on in the sale for best results.  Ordering by Thursday (or Friday at the latest) will ensure you get your product in time!  They will call you when your order is in (and I’m sure he’ll give you an idea about when you can expect it).
  5. Patiently wait for your eBay coupons to arrive, and rest assured knowing that your product will be waiting in the back for you and you won’t have to clear a single shelf!

IF YOU ARE GOING TO ORDER BE SURE TO PICK IT UP! DO NOT LEAVE THE STORE STUCK WITH INVENTORY! They are not likely to take an order from you again if you do this! This has been happening so just a friendly reminder to you not to do it. :)

Coupon Tip Tuesday: E-Coupons

coupon help, tips

E-Coupons or electronic coupons are a convenient way to save money at the grocery store. Free coupons load directly to your participating grocery store savings card, so there is no paper to lose or forget.

Fred Meyer ecoupons are so great. Basically you attach electronic coupons to your Fred Meyer rewards card. When you scan the card at check out, any qualifying coupons will deduct from your total!

Target ecoupons are called mobile coupons. These will really only work on smartphones, or a phone that has browser capabilities. Once a month, Target sends out a text with a link to their mobile web coupons. Clicking on the link brings you to a page that has a funky barcode that the cashier can scan at checkout. Learn more about Target Mobile Coupons.

SavingStar: If you haven’t signed up for SavingStar yet, what are you waiting for? This program is awesome!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Select the eCoupons you like on the website or mobile app and they are automatically linked to your store card.
  2. Use your card when you checkout and the money is added to your SavingStar account. The savings don’t change your bill at the register and the savings are not printed on the receipt. Instead, they get deposited into your account within 7-30 days depending upon where you shop.
  3. Once your SavingStar account reaches $5 in savings, you can pick your payout from a bank account deposit, a PayPal account deposit, an Amazon gift card  or a donation to charity. More options to come!

You can read more about this program HERE.

Cellfire:works with dozens of other stores besides Fred Meyer including: Safeway, Smiths, Vons, Domonicks, Vons, Fry’s, Tom Thumb, Pavillions, Ralphs, Randalls, Giant Eagle, Dillions and many more.
