DIY Flower Clips {Picture Tutorial}

I have 2 girls and they both love to wear bows in their hair. I LOVE to put fun accessories in their hair and am always looking for something fun, new and inexpensive to make! I am not a good bow maker (so I usually buy those), but I figured out how to make flower hair clips a few years ago. It is a quick, inexpensive gift to make for a baby shower; or if you are missing the perfect accessory for your little girl’s outfit. Here is what you need to make these cute flower clips.

DIY Cupcake plates & Cake plate {Picture Tutorial}

Hey Y’all! Today I’m going to show you how to make super cute cupcake and cake plates. I just hosted a bridal shower for my future sister-in-law. We had an assortment of cupcakes and I wanted some cupcake plates for the tablescape. I  didn’t want to spend a lot of money buying them so I made my own with just a few things from the thrift store and dollar store.

These were very inexpensive and easy to make. I have been scouting out the thrift store and dollar store for the supplies I needed to make these. Here is what you need:

what you need plates

I got the saucers and candlesticks from the Goodwill. I got the green plate and ice cream dish from dollar tree. You need a glue gun or E6000 glue. I used a glue gun because I wanted to be able to take them apart for easier storage. If you want it to be permanent use the E6000 glue. I spent around $7 for everything! The ones I found on Etsy were $18 for 1 plate!

This ice cream dish was perfect for a cake plate. It is bigger so it could support plate better than a candlestick.  Put hot glue on the bottom of the ice cream dish then place it in the center of the bottom of the plate.

I used my hand to apply even pressure to help it form a good bond.

DIY Magnetic Chalkboard {Picture Tutorial}

Hey Y’all! I’ve got a really easy craft for you this week. I’m going to show you how to make your own magnetic chalkboard. You only need 2 things:

chalkboard-2

{PIN THIS}

  • A Metal tray {I got mine from the Dollar Tree, they have a few different shapes}

chalkboard-4

Make sure the tray is wiped clean, I had a couple of dust things on it that I noticed after I started painting.

chalkboard-5

Follow the directions on the can. I applied 2 coats, letting it dry a little bit in between each coat.

chalkboard-7

Let it dry for 24 hours before you try to use it, again trust me on this. I was impatient and tried to use it after a few hours…it didn’t work so just let it dry.

chalkboard-8

I wanted mine on the side of a cabinet in my kitchen so I could put daily reminders on it. I used my favorite 3M picture hanging strips to hang it up so I can take the chalkboard down to use for other things {like photo shoots}.

chalkboard-9

I like that it is magnetic so I can put things {like coupons} that I don’t want to forget to use on it. A fun and quick craft that you can make for just a couple of dollars!

Painted Canvases {Easy DIY Craft Tutorial}

This is a super easy, inexpensive fast craft! It will be sure to brighten up any room or space!

{Pin This}

Supplies:
Canvas size of your choice (Hobby Lobby carries a package of 2 11×16 for 7.99 you can also buy them individually if you’d like)
Paint
Frog tape (this is THE ONLY tape I will use, it DOES NOT BLEED. I don’t recommend using the Scott’s blue painter tape… it will bleed. You can find this at Home Depot)
Sponge brush
Ruler
pencil

Decorating tip: It is always more appealing to the eye to decorate in odd numbers (i.e. 3, 5, etc..) Also, don’t hang photos higher than eye level. You want to actually be able to see the photo or art display!

I have been in my home for over a year and have been wanting to hang curtains on a wall in my TV room, but haven’t wanted to spent the money on the rod or curtains. Since stripes are so in right now I wanted to make striped curtains, but once I priced them out I decided it was more than I wanted to spend. I had some canvases laying around that I covered in fabric years ago… I now hated the fabric so I just stored them away. I decided to pull them out and re-use them! I decided since I wanted striped curtains I would make striped canvass next to the wind I wanted striped curtains on. I love how it turned out. Before you throw something away, see if it is something you can re-use and make better!

First decide what size of stripes you want. I wanted mine a little thicker so on an 8×10 I measured out 3 stripes. Start by measuring the center of your canvas and then divide that by how many stripes you want. I used a pencil to lightly mark so see if I had the desired look, then I taped my lines.

Once all your tape is on turn the canvas upside down and press down firmly while rubbing your finger over all the taped areas. Turn the canvas over and to the same to the edges. Be careful not to push on the canvas when it is right side up so you don’t dent the canvas.

Now you are ready to paint! Paint the untaped parts of your canvas and repeat several times. Make sure your first coat is dry before applying the second coat.

Once you have painted several coats and the paint is dry you can peal off the tape!

I hung my canvases length wise on an empty wall and spaced them evenly. Use a level when you hang photos or projects on your wall.. you want them to be level. I usually don’t ever hang the first photo or project in the right spot.. thats ok, just make sure you cover up the hole with your project and you can fill it later!

{Pin This}

I love how clean the stripes turned out! The only thing I actually bought for this project was the grey paint that was under $2.00 at Hobby Lobby.. that beats the $100.00+ dollars I would have spent on a rod and curtains!

DIY Craft: Moss Covered Letter

{Pin This}

Complete DIY craft for a moss covered letter. Makes a great dectrative piece for your home. Great wedding gift for the newly married couple to decorate their home in a Pottery Barn like style. So easy to make you can do it yourself… DIY!

Supplies:
Sheet moss
letters (you can use foam board, or cardboard and cut your own)
Hot glue gun
scissors

I saw some Moss covered letters on Pottery barn’s website; however, they were $79.00 a letter! I have to admit, they are absolutely darling, but not for the price tag. I went to my local Hobby Lobby and picked up some sheet moss, I have done this project with the regular bagged moss and it was so messy and took 5x’s as long, so if you can find the sheet moss that is definitely the way to go! There are different kinds of moss, a lighter green similar to what is on Pottery Barn’s website (shown above). Hobby Lobby was all out the day I went so I picked up the darker moss, It was $3.99 for a package. The day I went all dried floral was 50% off so I spent $1.99. Then, I went over Walmart and found a mini bi-fold foam board. It was an 12×18 sheet doubled it was about $3.99 as well, this will make 2 letters. The letter I wanted to make was an “H” so the foam board worked perfect for me. If you have a letter(s) you want to make and don’t want to take the time to cut and make your own, you can buy wood letters or paper mache letters for around $1.99 each at Hobby Lobby or most crafting stores. This is a little mess so make sure your doing this project where its ok to get a little messy!

First, either cut your letters or just have pre-cut ones ready to go

Pull the backing off the sheet moss

Put your letter on your sheet moss, measure an extra 3″ and cut around your letter

Hot glue the letter and place your sheet moss on top

Once it is all on one side of your letter, turn it over and glue the edges down. You will need to cut the edges at an angle so it will give you a finished edge

cut off any access and you are ready to display!

This letter cost me under $5.00 since I only used one side of the foam board.. sure beats $79.00! Happy crafting!

Paper Book Hearts

Need an idea for some inexpensive Valentines decor? I have the one for you! This project cost me under $4.00! I found this on etsy to purchase, but I thought I’d put my craftiness to use and make my own. Here is what you will need to make these cute paper hearts;
Supplies:

  • Stapler
  • Book or craft paper of your choice (if you don’t have a book you want to rip up, you can purchase inexpensive ones at a thrift shop)
  • Ruler
  • Hemp or ribbon ( I bought my hemp in the craft area at Walmart, it was about $3.75 for the entire spool)
  • Scissors

Begin by tearing out a few pages from your book. Then, measure ruler length (should be 1″) across the book page and mark with a pen or pencil.

One you have measured across you page cut the pages into strips

You should have at least seven 8″ strips…

  • Take one strip and measure it in half (should be 4″) mark it with a pen or pencil and cut
  • Take two more strips (I placed one on top of the other so they were cut exactly the same) and measure them at 5″, mark and cut (continue this process up to 7″-detail below)
  • Take two more strips and measure at 6″, mark and cut
  • Take two more strips and measure at 7″, mark and cut
  • If you want a larger heart add two more strips at 8″

Measure 11″ of hemp and make a knot at the end.

Make two piles of your cut book pages.  Each pile should contain one piece of each size
.  Once that is done, sandwich your knotted hemp in the middle (knot should be facing towards the bottom).

Staple (make sure your knot is stapled along with the paper, this may require two staples).

Begin gathering each cut book page up to the center, hold with your fingers until they are all gathered together

Staple at the end and you are done!

There are several ways you can display these cute hearts.  Ideas:  as a banner, on a wreath,or it would even be cute to display on some branches from your yard in a cute container.. there are so many possibilities!

Spruce Up Your Front Door Using Pinecones & Ribbon

{Pin This}

Since this blog has taken over my life and become my passion/hobby, I no longer craft.  Thankfully, I know some pretty awesome people who DO!  I’m excited to have Amie, guest blog for me today and share a super cute craft (that she needs to come and do for me)…

Hello! My name is Amie, I am a wife of almost 6 years and a new mother to a 4 month old little girl who I adore!  I LOVE to decorate and craft and am always on the lookout for something fun and easy to make ( it helps me unwind from a busy day).  I like crafts that can be done in under an hour, because one, I’m impatient and two, I don’t always have a lot of time during the day to dedicate to crafting!

Now that the Holidays are over I feel like my house is bare… I wasn’t sure what to put up on my door so I headed over to pinterest and found a few ideas. I didn’t see exactly what I wanted, so I gathered a few ideas and made it my own!

Learn how to spruce up your front door using pinecones:

Supplies:

  • 6-8 pinecones (any size will work). You can buy them at Walmart, but I suggest to go outside and get some for free!
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ribbon of your choice (roughly 1 spool, I purchased mine from Hobby Lobby for $3.99, spa color)
  • scissors
  • A frame – optional (I bought one from local thrift shop for a few dollars and painted it black)

Cut your ribbon as desired length (I did mine 1 foot, 5″ long)

Frugal Felt Christmas Tree Project! Fun for the Little People!

Feeling Crafty? Here’s a fun, quick and festive project for you!

This past week, my 3 and 5 year old decided their new mission is to disassemble and rearrange the ornaments on my Christmas tree… 10 times a day. SOO… I decided they needed a little something of their own! Inspired by this cute idea of a no sew felt Christmas tree, I made one too! I spent less than $10 on materials (which I bought at Walmart) and a 2 hour nap time to put it together! Easy peasy and the kiddos LOVE it!

Materials Needed

1 yard green felt (I paid $3.97 for mine)
Colored felt pieces (I bought a multi pack for $3.97)
Hot glue gun and glue
Scissors
Marker (I used a fine tip Sharpie)
Round cookie cutter/cup for tracing (I also used a star cutter for the star on top)
Command Strips (I had some left over but I think they run about $2.97 for a 9 pack at Walmart)

(This is what my felt pieces look like)

Instructions

First you’ll need to cut out your Christmas tree from the yard of green felt. Lay the felt out flat and trace the shape of a tree (whatever shape and size you want) on one side and cut out OR fold the felt in half, trace half of a tree and cut out so that when you unfold it, both sides of your tree will be the same. (This is what I did and it worked great, however I made mine to short so I decided to add an extra piece on the bottom to make it bigger.)

Next, using a round cookie cutter or whatever is handy, trace circles (and a star!) on the colored felt pieces and cut them out. (I cut out several circles for ornaments and several to cut apart for decorating them.) Using a hot glue gun, glue cut out felt pieces, numbers, letters, ribbons or whatever else you like onto the ornaments, just make sure they don’t get to heavy or they wont stick to the felt tree and they’ll fall off. Let cool.

Finally, attach the Command strips to the back of the tree and attach to a wall. (Following the removal instructions, the Command strips usually come off without damaging your wall or paint.) The ornaments should stick to the felt tree and come off easily to do over and over again! Yay!

What is your favorite frugal activity for the kids?
