the best homemade red velvet hot chocolate

Homemade Red Velvet Hot Chocolate

My husband proclaimed that this is the best hot chocolate he has ever had! It is not just hot chocolate with red food coloring. Indeed, it is much better – rich, velvety, and full of the classic red velvet cocoa flavor.

I am sure I will be making this hot chocolate again soon, with or without the food coloring. (By the way, you can see how to make those cute mini heart cookies here.)

One of the key ingredients to make this hot chocolate stand out from the crowd is the cream cheese. Of course, it is better with cream cheese! I should probably add cream cheese to all hot chocolate from now on. 😉

The semi-sweet chocolate provides the rich cocoa flavor. You can probably get away with using nearly any type of milk in this recipe, but I used 2%. Overall, this red velvet hot cocoa uses simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand.

(In case you’re wondering, that green and white thing in the photo is my “salt pig.” I got it a few years ago and I love it. The salt is easily accessible, but still protected. This is the one I have.)

You can blend the room temperature cream cheese and milk together in a blender, or with a hand blender in the saucepan, until smooth.

Feel free to add whipped cream or marshmallows to your hot chocolate, but you don’t even need it! This red velvet hot chocolate is rich and delicious on its own. If you find it is too rich for you, adding more milk may help to adapt it to your taste.

Instructions

  • Add the milk and cream cheese to a blender and blend until smooth. Or if you have a stick blender, you can blend them together in a medium saucepan.
  • Pour the milk mixture into a medium saucepan, if not already, and add the chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar, and salt. Warm over medium-low heat, whisking occasionally, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Whisk in the red food coloring, adding more until you get the color you like.

Recipe Notes

This hot chocolate can be cooled and stored in the refrigerator for several days. Reheat to serve.
