Frugal granola

Easy, Frugal, and Healthy Homemade Granola Recipe

If you have never made homemade granola from scratch before you should definitely give it a try. I made a batch for the first time this weekend and it was over the top delicious. Seriously, it knocked every store-bought granola I have ever tried out of the park!

I found this healthy granola recipe on Yummy Healthy Easy and plan on making it again and again and again. Scrumptious does not even begin to describe it! It’s pretty frugal too!

Ingredients

For this frugal granola recipe, there are only 7 main ingredients, so it’s pretty simple. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your granola though! Feel free to add some goodies like chocolate chips, nuts, or whatever else you can come up with!

How to Make Granola From Scratch

I promise you this is so much easier than you may think! If this is your first time making homemade granola from scratch, don’t even worry! You’re only a few steps away from your own delicious, healthy granola.

Granola dry ingredients

Step 1. Prep Everything

Before you do anything else, preheat your oven to 325 and prepare a rimmed baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or cooking spray. Set aside for later.

Once that’s done, in a large bowl, mix together your oats, almonds, coconut, sunflower seeds, and flax seed. In a separate pot, melt your coconut oil and then whisk it together with your honey.

Step 2. Mix the Granola and Honey Mixtures

Pretty simple! Grab a non-stick spatula and use it to slowly stir the dry granola ingredients and that sweet honey mixture together.

Step 3. Bake!

Ok, now it’s time to take the baking sheet you prepared in step one! Pour your granola mixture onto the sheet and spread it out evenly across the pan.

Now just bake the granola for about 15 minutes, then stir and bake for another 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool and enjoy!

Additional Tips

Once you’re done making your homemade granola, you can store it in an airtight container for a few weeks. One of my favorite ways to store this is in mason jars, especially since I can portion it out to exactly what I need.

We often pack our homemade granola as a great snack for ballgames, hikes, and other outdoor activities because it is delicious on its own. It’s full of nutrients and protein as well!

My absolute favorite way to use this is as a delicious topping for yogurt and my husband enjoys eating it in a bowl with a little bit of milk poured over it.

Other serving ideas: over cooked apples, as a salad topping, on oatmeal, or in smoothies.

Next time I make this granola recipe, I am going to mix in chocolate chips and chop up marshmallows into tiny pieces because I think my kids are going to absolutely love it! I may even toss in some M&M’s as an extra little bit of sweetness and surprise.

  • I love to make granola!

My favorite ingredient is coconut. My favorite recipe uses mollasses and orange juice…

I love that you can just toss in whatever you want.

Don’t expect it to crisp/harden while in the oven. That was my first batch’s mistake. Ended up burning it.

  • Silly question but I have never eaten granola before. I’ve had oatmeal but not granola. What’s the difference? Do you just eat the granola like that or add water and cook it? Are you supposed to eat it plain or sprinkle it on something? Is it supposed to be more for like a finger snack or breakfast meal with fork? I’m confused! 🙂 Like I said… silly question…
