How to Get an Amazon Price Adjustment

how to get an amazon price adjustment

Update Fall 2022: Amazon has changed their price adjustment policy several times over the years, and continue to do so today. What you can get a price adjustment on is constantly changing. But our method to getting a price adjustment on Amazon is still worth giving a try.

In every amazon post, we add a line at the bottom reminding you that amazon prices change quickly. Sometimes this works to your advantage and sometimes it works to your disadvantage. I recently purchased a cool new Lego Minecraft set for my kids. The next day I noticed that the price had dropped down to $34.99! I was super bummed that I did not get to save the extra money on this purchase.

One of our Facebook friends pointed out that you can request a refund for the price difference.

So I decided to give it a try and it worked! I’m super excited to share it with you!

By the way, if you want to automate Amazon price adjustments, check out Paribus! They do everything for you! 😀

Note: After doing some research, it looks like Amazon has discontinued their price matching and price protection policies 🙁 Paribus will still track for late shipping times from Amazon, but that’s it.

That being said, you can still give the method below a shot. Some have still had success with it! If you try it out, let us know how it goes in the comments.

Step 4

You will then see a drop downs menu form. In the first box choose, “Returns and refunds”,  then a second box will appear. In the second box select “Other return or refund issue”. Then in the fill in the blank type, “Partial Refund Price Change”. Then you can email them, (this is what I did) call them, or start a live chat. All three methods work, but I prefer the email. All three methods should work.

Step 5

If you choose email just explain what you would like done, and click “send email”. I have posted my example below.

I hope this is helpful for you. I was sure excited to learn about it. I have found that amazon is has fabulous customer service. Each time I have contacted with them they have been very helpful and they always resolved my issues. Come to think of it I think I got a $10 price adjustment last year via live chat for Just Dance 4! So if something goes wrong with your order don’t be afraid to ask for help at the amazon help page.

Items to note:

  • In most cases this is limited to 7-days from the shipping date.
  • Some reports are saying that this only works on items sold by ” target=”_blank”>amazon. Let us know what you find out.

One more reason that we love Amazon

While Amazon strives to maintain competitive prices on everything they carry, they no longer do price adjustments.

  • Glad it worked out for you! I tried this over Live Chat last year and they wouldn’t do it :(. Maybe they have a different policy now?

    • We have had lots of reports that it is subject to a 7 day limit. So that could be the problem. I did this last Dec or Nov via live chat and it worked for me.

    • In my experience the live chat’s always end badly! If you call them, they’ll do almost anything for you! Also, I think it’s 7 days from the day you receive the item. However, I’ve called before on something that I’d bought 2 weeks previous and they still gave me the adjustment. Amazon is pretty great! (Unless you live chat with them). 🙂

    • It worked! Thank you so much for this wonderful tip!!! I did not know they did that and I have been shopping on Amazon since 2004!!! I had them call me! Girl, I have actual sent products back to them and repurchased them just so I could get that better price!!! Hopefully, I will discover more AWESOME tips from your website!!! Again, Thank you!!! 🙂

    • Tried this today Nov. 2018. Worked today, but was skeptical because in the past it did not work. I asked for a Amazon Gift Card too.

  • I just chatted with them yesterday about a price adjustment. The lady told me that since it was within 7 days from the ship date they could do it. I’ve always had good luck with Amazon’s customer service

  • I have called them up and ask for a price adjustment and they have given it to me.

    • Hi, I just got a price adjustment (purchase delivered within 7 days of price drop) and asked about the policy: they’ll only honor price drops for items Sold by Amazon and Fulfilled by Amazon. Maybe that’s why you didn’t get it

  • I’ve chatted with them online before & they gave me more off than just the difference. They gave me an additional $12 off of what the difference was! I love shopping on Amazon.

  • Wish I would have done this! I looked for a way to do this a few weeks ago on the LeapPad2 and couldn’t find it. My price difference was so big that it was worth it for me to return and repurchase at the lower price, so I did. Thank you so much for the tip!!! I will absolutely do this in the future!

  • Each CS person is a different experience. Amazon’s policy is not to do a price match, but some CS’s will do it for you if its within a certain time frame. I have had it done before and am grateful for it.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!!! Yesterday I placed a large order from Amazon and after reading this article decided to check on the shipping dates and check my order. Well, lo and behold, one of the items i ordered dropped in price by 15.75 overnight. i followed your directions, contacted amazon via chat box and just provided my order number and the difference in price. I will receive a credit in 2-3 business days for the amount it decreased.

  • I just did this for an order and got about $9 back. The rep quoted me their policy is if it is sold by Amazon and the adjustment is requested within 7 days of delivery. We are saving the chat to reference if anyone gives us trouble in the future.

  • Thanks for the info. I got $15 back this morning. One item was through a second vendor and the other item was ordered in early November through Amazon. Awesome!

  • I purchased an item on Nov 21. On Nov 22 it went on lightning deal. I tried to cancel and repurchase but the item was in the queue for shipping. I emailed asking for an adjustment and heard nothing.
    Then I saw your post.
I went that route, including a cut and paste of the original email text and their reply with my inquiry. My difference was happily refunded within 4 hours. THANK YOU for posting this 🙂 It just made my day.

  • So happy to find your post! I was able to start a live chat and got $16 back for a pair of boots I bought. They did say what you had mentioned about only refunding 7 days from the delivery date- I was one day over and still got the price adjustment refund. It was easy and painless! Thank you!

    • Kelsey-

So pleased to hear that this amazon price adjustment tutorial worked so well for you. Amazon has great customer service. We just love them to pieces. Thanks for leaving a comment and letting us know about your great experience.

  • Sometimes the price drop happens well outside of the 7-day window and/or you can’t get a customer service agent to give you the refund. If the item is new and unused (and depending on the item’s size & weight) you may consider returning the items at your expense and reordering the items you need at the cheaper price. You might spend $6 or $7 on postage to return them, but if you save $30 on the price drop, it’s still a win. I’ve successfully done this several times. One more tool for your money-saving arsenal! 🙂

  • It worked for me just now. Thanks for the information!

  • Thanks you. Just went a month back in purchase date. I found about 6 or so items that went up in price. 5 were refunded. So although the 7 day rule was mentioned, some CSR were willing to give partial refunds. I used the email method and all 6 were refund requests were emailed individually. Hope this helps someone.

  • Thank you so much for this!! I just got over $60 back on a stroller I had purchased! Whoo hoo!

  • Do you know if they still offer this policy? I couldn’t find the yellow “contact us” button on the help page. Is there a new way to get to the menu that you used?

  • Thanks for this post. I just contacted them because I’d purchased that same lego set yesterday at the higher price. Hoping for a $5 refund 🙂

  • This was a great help. I’d ordered a rather expensive pair of winter boots and found that today they were $40 less expensive and through the chat I received a refund for the difference. Thank you for posting this very helpful information!

Also the person on chat explained that it is 7 days from time of delivery that is the window for asking for a partial refund/price adjustment.

  • Well, I bought a memory card 37 days ago, and the price went from $37 down to $23. I went through online chat, and in less than 5 minutes they refunded me the difference! Wow!

  • I followed your advice, and Amazon replied in about 10 minutes approving my partial refund. Thanks Monica!

  • Thank you for this article..I just stumbled on this based on “Black Friday 2014” shopping on Amazon.. this was a big help knowing that I could get a refund of some sort for an item I purchased recently .. saved me about $10 thank you so much 🙂

  • Terrible experience with Amazon customer service and dishonest business practices. I ordered an Amazon FireTV unit one day for $99. The very next day it went on sale for $69. I thought about ordering the lower-priced one and returning the higher-priced one ordered the day before, but then read about their price adjustment and since I get free shipping with Amazon Prime I thought it silly to cause them to incur the cost of shipping and returning the first unit. Big mistake. The first customer service rep said the $69 was a “lightning sale” and could no longer be honored. The second customer service rep outright lied (and essentially called me a liar) and said it’s never been that price. The third customer service rep just said “thank you for your feedback” when I tried to explain how I was trying to save us BOTH $ by avoiding unnecessary shipping costs by returning the first unit. They weren’t hearing any of that logic. So I’m refusing delivery of the $99 unit when it arrives and they’re going to get it back, anyway. Very stupid business practices on their part. They lost the sale, they incurred the cost of shipping for a unit that is going to be put right back in their lap, and they have a PO’d customer who will now order directly from other sources. Their claim is to be Earth’s most “customer-centric” company but they are light years away from it.

    • Wow. That really stinks. I’ve never had an experience like that! They are usually so amazing!

    • I have been using this process for a few years now. It ONLY has worked on products sold by Amazon, and USUALLY requires that it be with 7 days of RECEIVING the product! Also watch for: If the product you bought was sold by Amazon, and the price drops, make sure the new low price item is ALSO sold by Amazon…sometimes its a different seller with the low price. I have saved so much money! I bought a heater for xmas for $136.99 and it went on sale that week for $99! I was refunded the difference without any problems. I normally use live chat, but have also used email, and I have never had a problem as long as it is within 7 days and was sold by Amazon.

  • thanks! helped me out for $30 🙂

  • Great info, gang. Saw a toy at Target that sold for $40. Was pretty excited that I scored it at Amazon for $32. Until it dropped to $22 three days later on Amazon. Followed your steps just now, and I’ve got high hopes for a price adjustment. Thanks for the quick and easy tutorial.

  • Thanks so much for the detailed instructions! Toy was at Target for $75, bought on Amazon for $55, and today it was under $30 on Amazon. Went through live chat and since it was within a week of the ship date, they gave me a $25 refund. This is a huge help since money is tight this year. 🙂

  • Hoover vacuum purchased 2 weeks ago, price dropped by $30! Followed the email suggestion exactly, and got a response within 5 minutes. Refund of $32.19 (tax included). Thanks a bunch!

  • I ordered from Amazon for the first time this morning & my item dropped down in price by almost $13.00 by dinner time! I chose to use the Live Chat option. My representative was so great. I learned that you can basically choose any of the drop down choices for any issue, because ultimately you’re explaining the situation specifically & they will still address it & help you regardless! I initially chose the refund choice just like this guide explained, but it was actually the only choice that wouldn’t let me proceed, so I just picked another random order issue & still got my refund!!! =D

  • I do this all the time. I bookmark all the items I have purchased for a week after the purchase. Anytime the price is reduced, I contact them and for the most part, refunded within 24 hours. 🙂

  • I purchased a camera last Christmas that was a lightning deal. Later that day they lowered the price and THEY e-mailed me and gave me the $50 difference back. I was amazed!
It’s good to know I can request price adjustments! I’m going to be sure and watch all my future orders!

  • I love your instructions and use it all the time. Thank you so much!

  • After I sent in my request I realized that the adjustment would put me under the $35 free shipping minimum, so I figured my request would be denied, but it was approved! Thanks for your blog post!!!

    before: $40.36, after: $34.51

  • Thank you! I did not know that this was an option! I ordered the Lego Dimensions starter pack at the beginning of November, then the price dropped $15 and I was so bummed. After seeing your post just now I followed your instructions and received an email reply within an hour that they had issued a credit to my account! (FYI, I had gone way beyond the 7 days…more like 3 weeks, and they still gave me the credit)

  • This is a great tip – Thanks!

  • No longer doing price adjustment refunds. They did for me last year but won’t this year. Bummed I threw out my sneaker box. I could have returned for free and repurchased since it was a prime item.

    • They are… They seem to have one team of people who won’t. But if you try again, they’ll do it!

      • Not working for me. Here’s a message I received today…

        Hello,

We work hard to find the best prices out there and match them for all customers every day. Our prices do change over time. With the exception of TVs, Amazon.com doesn’t offer post-purchase adjustments.

However, you can let us know about a lower price by clicking the “tell us about a lower price” link in the Product Details section of some product pages.

To read more about our pricing, go to our Help pages:

        https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=468502

We hope to see you again soon.

We’d appreciate your feedback. Please use the links below to tell us about your experience today.

    • Amy, I used to get price adjustments all the time as well, but just this week I asked for one and they say they’re no longer doing it. I’m bummed b/c I would’ve gotten $5 back!

    • I tried this morning as it’s prime day and an item my mother bought on Sunday is now $130 cheaper! They wouldn’t do it, said their price adjustment policy changed in April, I went up the chain as far as I could. My other option would be to return it at my own expense and incur a 20% restocking fee which would not really make it worth the hassle.

  • Tried this morning via email with two different products, two different orders. Each response was from a different rep at Amazon, and both essentially said “no dice.” I think the ability to get price adjustments with Amazon is now extinct.

  • Ordered athletic shoes yesterday, and got a promotional email today for 10%off athletic shoes. Contacted Amazon and they would not issue the $6.50 price adjustment!
“We work hard to find the best prices out there and match them for all customers every day. Our prices do change over time. With the exception of TVs, Amazon.com doesn’t offer post-purchase adjustments.”

  • Yesterday I bought on Amazon a “GreenWorks 24282 G-MAX 40V 150 MPH Variable Speed Cordless Blower” and paid $38.61, today I saw its price dropped to $28.89, I initialed a chat with Amazon customer service seeking for price adjustment for the difference, and the reply was: “…. I understand your concern regarding the price change but I’m really sorry unfortunately we don’t price-match due to certain policies. We consistently work hard to find the best prices and match them for all our valuable customers.”, I responded to the agent that: “… this is NOT price match from a 3rd party seller, and that Amazon price matching policy does not apply”, but no veil. Then I asked if its all right for me go ahead refuse the incoming shipment and get a full refund. She said that would be fine. Asked again for her to confirm that I will get FULL refund without deduction of shipping cost, her answer was: “… Yes. Sometimes the carrier might charge for the return shipping, In such case, Please contact us back , we will issue the refund of the shipping fees”. So I went ahead and called UPS refusing that shipment.

    • Wow, I am so sorry you had to go through all of that trouble!!

    • I had the same problem but called instead and they got a manager the approved the partial refund. Seems I never have luck with the chat feature for these partial refunds

    • I just had to do the same thing. I bought an item 5 days ago and now it is listed $100 cheaper. I called today to get a price adjustment and they gave me some scripted ridiculousness about not price matching… I was tried to argue and then decided it wasn’t worth it. I already ordered the new one at the cheaper price and I’ll return the previous one when it arrives. That’s pretty horrible customer service if you ask me. I’ll definitely start using Amazon as the back-up plan for now on.

  • Thank you for the tip! I just got off chat with them and they would do nothing. However, I had them call me and they not only gave me the difference ($10) but gave me a credit of 30% for my “troubles” and thanked me for being a Prime member! Now I have $80 to buy another gift!

  • 2019 July.
    Just for you to know:
-It works by chat very well.
-It is for price change and also for new coupon.
-It is not necessary to be sold by Amazon. Mine was from another seller from Amazon Marketplace (but shipped by Amazon Prime if this is important)

I bought a product without coupon. Today it was a coupon of 2$ available; the lady from chat gave me 5 $ in credits Amazon (will apply automatically on orders sold by Amazon only but not others sellers from Amazon Marketplace).

  • amazon just refused to do this for an item that went on sale the next day so at their expense I will send the item back I have reordered it at sale price

  • I tried this today for an item I purchased last week that dropped in price by $200. Chatted with two reps and they flat out refused to refund the difference, and advised that I return the original purchase and buy it again at the lower price. For a $200 difference I am definitely doing this, but it seems like a really poor policy on their part.

    • That’s unfortunate! It seems to be really hit and miss over at Amazon. I agree though… the hassle of the return is definately worth that $200 difference!

  • Greetings,

This no longer works, Amazon changed their site and their policies, they no longer give price matches. I have tried to follow your suggestions and these steps now lead you to their online chat. There is nothing there anymore to get your money back on items that have changed. They say they change too frequently and they do their best to bring us the lowest prices. I would suggest updating this information. They do give refunds for things that are missing or damaged, or not received, but they no longer with price match.

  • Cool, thanks. I asked for a price adjustment after the chat bot. They were able to help me with a Amazon coupon instead of a partial refund, because the item I purchased was from a third party seller.

Amazon always favors if you buy it directly from Amazon and not from a third party seller inside the Amazon website.

  • Might still work if the list price drops, but they probably won’t do it for temporary sales.

I just tried to price-adjust a FireTV Stick (sold by Amazon) that is on sale a week after I bought it, and the chat agent said “the item is in sale now and hence the prices are low. I really wish I could help you in this case but very sorry to tell you that we do not price match the item/order when it’s in sale.”

  • I tried to get a price adjustment just now via the chat box. I bought 2 items on Nov 11 but 4 days later the price dropped down $5 each, so I wanted to get the $10 difference. However the agent said they no longer honor price adjustments and advised me to return the items and buy them again. However when I tried to buy again, I couldn’t proceed since they had set the purchase limits on the items. Let’s see if the limit expires after 7 days so I can try again.

  • I used the chat bot to try and get a price adjustment for my product since it was less than 7 days since day of purchase. The chat rep said it was company policy and they cannot do price adjustments and advised that I return the product and purchase it again. No other solution offered. I then called and spoke with a help representative. He also mentioned that it is company policy that they don’t do price adjustments. But after reviewing my order, and since it was less than 7 days of purchase, was able to provide me the difference in a promotional balance. Lesson learned, always speak with someone for this.

  • I have nearly $40 in price adjustments on Black Friday items that I bought within the last month and are still in their return window. I’m nervous that Amazon won’t let me return and re-purchase but based on other commenters’ experiences, it sounds like they are ok with it. So I’m gonna give it a try. ::fingers crossed::

  • I bought a $2000 TV from Amazon (not third party) and the next week it was $400 off. I just talked with service rep via chat and they said I had to return the TV and order a new one – he even scheduled the pickup for me (TV is very large) for the return.

What I want to know is this. If I order the new one and have it delivered into my living room before they pick up the return, can I just let the people pick up the new TV, still in box? Or does Amazon record the serial number of the item that I purchased?

What a shame because it is a lot of trouble, a lot of landfill waste in packing material, fuel spent, etc… especially for a company that pretends to be eco friendly.

    • That sure does seem silly to jump thru those hoops! I thought they used the return codes that you print out to apply returns. But I could be wrong there. If you end up doing this, will you come back and let us know how it works out for you?

    • @Joe. Yes, last year I had a gazebo return pick up coincide with the delivery of my new gazebo, same item, just lower price. I did not know that the two events were going to coincide since the delivery of the new gazebo happened a day earlier than scheduled. I called up the pick up service to which the pick up was assigned. To my surprise, they claimed that they had already picked up the item. The item they were picking up was still seating in my garage. At first, I thought, they must have the address mixed-up. Only when I logged into My Orders, I saw that the newer item had been delivered, and I realized that the pick up company had taken the item that had just been delivered right before they came. No one noticed anything, nor did they ask about it, and this was a large item.

  • Thanks, worked for me! I chose contact by phone, I guessed that would be more successful because its easier for them to tel;l you no by email/chat then voice 🙂

  • I gave it a shot because an item I bought a couple weeks ago is a lightning deal today for roughly half the price that I paid. I initially went through chat and when that didn’t work, I called. I was as patient as possible, but I did escalate to a supervisor because I’m still in the return window and their policy is garbage. I haven’t even opened the original item yet, so you better believe that I ordered it at the sale price today and have started a return on the original. They left me no choice.

  • Just called today (10/19/21) to Amazon and used live “call me” support feature. Got a live customer support technician and within 5 minutes had the price adjustment/refunded ($30). It was enough for me to call and inquire even though the article states Amazon no longer honors price adjustments. I would recommend using the “call me” feature as I had no issues at all. Good luck to all!

  • Thanks for the advice, I got a refund of $75 for an item that was discounted 1 week after it shipped. The live chat operator denied the claim, but when I then spoke on the phone with an Amazon service representative, they were cooperative, and issued a credit on my account. Don’t use the live chat.
