Here’s a great recipe if you’re looking for a healthier alternative to store-bought ketchup or maybe just want to try something different. Fun way to sneak some veggies in there too! You probably have most or all of these ingredients in your pantry/fridge right now. And even if you don’t, it will often still be cheaper to buy the ingredients than to buy Heinz. 😉
Peel the carrots, trim the ends, and cut into 3-inch chunks. Steam the carrot chunks for 10-12 minutes.
Then puree the carrots in a food processor or blender for about 2 minutes. You may need to add a tablespoon or more of water to get a smooth texture.
Stir all ingredients together in a big saucepan and bring to boil over medium-high heat. (It may stain your spoon, by the way.) Reduce heat and simmer until the mixture is reduced by about half, 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on your desired consistency, you may want to gradually add more water. Taste and add more seasoning, if you want to. (I only needed to add some water!) Let cool before serving.
Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Freeze in an ice cube tray, then transfer to a freezer bag. Or freeze 1/4-cup portions in freezer bags, for up to 3 months.
