There is a wealth of information out there on ways to reduce your power bill. The top ten most reoccurring tips I have found are:

1. Set your home’s thermostat at the coolest level you can without making your rooms uncomfortable. For most homes, the heating bill drops by about 2 percent for every 1 degree the thermostat is lowered.

2. Lower your home’s thermostat at bedtime or while you’re away during the day. (See Tip #7.) Setting the thermostat to 58 degrees while you’re asleep (you may need an extra blanket!) can cut your natural-gas bill by up to 7 percent.

3. Seal up leaky drafts around doors and windows with weather-stripping, caulking, and door sweeps. (And don’t forget to keep the damper closed on a fireplace or wood-burning stove when it’s not in use.) Also seal up any leaks or gaps in furnace ducts that extend through unheated basements or crawl spaces.

4. Have your furnace inspected and tuned up every two to three years (before the heating season starts), and clean or replace the air filters on your furnace every two months during the heating season. Your furnace will run more efficiently and use less energy.

5. Set your water heater’s thermostat to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Lowering it from a higher setting will save you money and reduce the risk of being scalded.

6. Take shorter showers, wash clothes in cold water, and don’t over-dry your clothing.

7. Install a programmable thermostat for home heating. It can save lots of energy while you’re sleeping or away from home – and will re-warm your house shortly before you wake up or return home from work.

8. Replace traditional, incandescent lighting with Energy Star® compact fluorescent bulbs and fixtures (especially in the lights you use most).

9. Make sure you have adequate insulation in your home’s attic and walls, and around heating ducts that pass through unheated spaces.

10. Purchase an Energy Star® rated high-efficiency furnace, water heater, washer/dryer, and dishwasher when it’s time to replace worn-out models.

My name is Becky…

and I have been couponing since we gave birth to our first baby, sweet little Abi, who likes to cry in the checkout lines to get me a better deal (the Cashiers have pity on me I think) in March.  My Sister-in-Law turned me on to the FabuLESSly Frugal website, because she knew my goal was to be able to be a stay at home mom, and in order to do that we had to get our $200 a month grocery bill down by at least half.  She started telling me how she had 30 boxes of cereal in her pantry that she paid 25-50 cents each for.  Little did I know how much fun this would be!

My favorite thing to do is to play the “Coupon Fairy” with the coupons I know I’m not going to use, where I head into a store, and simply lay the coupons on the products they are for!  I feel like I’m writing checks to people.

I used to be a Walmart Junkie where I would go in, list in hand, and come out with 2-3 grocery bags full of food for $100!!!  It was insane- and I thought I was getting a GOOD deal!!  Now, Jeremiah’s (my husband) favorite line, when I pay even 25 cents for something is, “You spent to much!”.  He’s joking of course, but it’s awesome that we have an entire pantry (and I’m talking 10 foot long by 8 foot high) full of food! We also have enough Shampoo/Conditioner/Bodywash/Toothbrushes/Toothpaste (etc, you get the idea) to last us at least a year!  And it was all FREE!!! (Okay, I did spend 25 cents a bottle on my body wash, but I’m picky).

My two favorite couponing stories both happened at Albertson’s.  The first one was where I got 10 Boxes of Cherrios for FREE, because I had doublers and 55 cent off coupons… I had 10 boxes, 10 doublers, and 10 coupons, and the lovely Cashier didn’t make me break up my transactions… 10 boxes, 60 Cents in tax, 1 transaction!!!

My 2nd one was at FabuLESSly Frugals favorite Albertson’s (5&O), where the manager saw me pushing my 2 carts through the store (one held Abi and her gear, one held my groceries and coupon binder) and actually came up behind me in line, closed the line (so we weren’t in a hurry) and entertained my baby as we were doing the 6 transactions!  That’s customer service!! We now spend about $50 a month on groceries, and I can buy things that were luxuries before (even when our budget was $200!) without ANY guilt!

Here’s an idea to help kids learn about their body. Trace the child’s outline with sidewalk chalk and have them show you where their hands, feet, head, etc. are.This particular subject wouldn’t put his hands out to the side for anything! He had to have them behind his head. Then let the kids draw their own eyes, ears, mouth, and nose.  You can also let them trace you, which was my son’s favorite part!

Computer Glitch Making Coupons Worth Less Than Their Value

In an attempt to remedy the computers beeping when a coupon exceeds a product price, Target made it so the computer automatically adjusts the coupon value down.  This created an even bigger problem, however, on coupons that are good for 2 or more items.

For example, if you bought 3 Johnson and Johnson First Aid To Go Boxes for $.97 ea and used the $3/3 Band-Aid, Neosporin, Purell (8 oz +), Cortaid, or J&J Red Cross Product coupon from 8/1 SS, the computer would automatically adjust your coupon down to just $.97, shorting you $2.03.  Target says they’re working on a fix, but be sure to watch the register closely so you can correct the problem while you’re still in the store!
