Meaningful Easter Tradition
Making these cookies on the eve of Easter is a wonderful way to gather the family together and remember the reason we celebrate Easter. The cookies are simple to make with only a few ingredients. Make them as a family and read the Bible verses that go along with the ingredients and Easter story of the resurrection. Get out your Bible and open up those scriptures!
This activity is a fun opportunity to teach your children about Jesus and Easter. Such a great Easter tradition to do as a family each year!
You might already have all of the ingredients and supplies. You only need pecans, vinegar, salt, sugar, and egg whites for the cookie batter. Find coupons! Additional supplies include a Bible, wooden spoon or rolling pin, resealable bag, parchment paper, cookie sheets, mixer, mixing bowl, teaspoon, and tape.
I think there is power in teaching with activities. The children get to be involved and use all of their senses with this recipe story. Touch, taste, smell, see, and hear. Beating the pecans as we remember how Christ was beaten.
Smelling the vinegar and tasting the bitter salt…
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Seeing the pure whiteness of the beaten egg whites, remembering the pureness of Jesus and His love, and that we too can become pure because of Him.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
All throughout the recipe, there are scripture verses from the Bible to read, telling the story of the resurrection and bringing it life.
Then seal the cookies in the tomb of an oven and go to bed! The teaching moments continue into Easter when you all get to eat the cookies in the morning.
And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
