Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk Recipe

Did you know that you could make your own sweetened condensed milk? For the longest time, I thought you could only get sweetened condensed milk in cans from the grocery store.

With this easy sweetened condensed milk substitute, I was doubtful at first, but a few minutes later I was amazed and pleased! Lo and behold, there in my blender was that sweet, thick, magical ingredient – sweetened condensed milk. Super easy – only took a few ingredients and a few minutes!

Getting the Right Consistency

A good hand mixer, hand blender, or food processor will do the job as well as a blender. Just throw all the ingredients in there.

Depending on how thick you like it, increase the water to 1/2 cup total. If it’s still a little too thick, add a little more water until it reaches the consistency you need and want. WARNING, there is a fine line here, add the additional water gradually! A few times I’ve had to add a little more powdered milk and sugar because I thinned it too much.

Storing Your Homemade Condensed Milk

Pour your sweetened condensed milk into a jar and refrigerate for up to 5 days. Enjoy using it in all of your favorite recipes!

Condensed Milk Substitute Recipe Yield

The yield will vary depending on how much water you add but plan on getting at least 1 cup. One cup of this homemade sweetened condensed milk has a volume of 8 ounces, but by weight, it is about 9.3 ounces, in case that helps anyone. 🙂

How to Make Sweetened Condensed Milk Fast

This is a super simple and quick sweetened condensed milk substitute that will save you a trip to the grocery store!

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 cup instant nonfat dry milk
  • cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ to ½ cup boiling water
  • ¼ cup butter, melted 2 oz

Instructions

  • Place the dry milk, granulated sugar, 1/3 cup of the boiling water, and the melted butter in a blender.
  • Blend all ingredients together until they are smooth, scraping down the sides of the blender occasionally to get all the dry ingredients incorporated.
  • Condensed milk typically has a thick, syrupy consistency, but if your homemade condensed milk is too thick to pour easily, add another spoonful or two of boiling water and blend to incorporate. Adjust the water until you are happy with the consistency.
  • Use your homemade sweetened condensed milk right away, or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It will get thicker when it is refrigerated, but will loosen up when stirred and brought to room temperature.

  • I’ve been making this for years, my friend gave me the recipe when I was lactose intolerant. I use powdered coffee cream instead of powdered milk.
    I prefer this to the canned variety.

  • Can I substitute regular milk instead of the powdered milk and water?

    • To be honest, I’m not sure about this one either, but it makes sense that the powdered milk is what makes it thick. I believe using regular milk instead of powdered milk would make it thin and not at all condensed.
